I am rather bummed out got to where I am keeping her started her up not a problem, went to get gas and hose her down before the show and seemed as if everything was fine, I got to a stop sign and put her in neutral, went to put her in first again and nothing? my shifter appeared frozen. I couldn't get her in gear at all so I pushed her to the side and thought the worst, but then (now I will do my best to explain in words) you have the steering wheel in the cab area the three in the tree shifter as well, it then goes through the fire wall, with the steering column, and the shifter follows parallel and comes to a box with rubber bushings on the top and the bottom, looking from the top you also see 2 linkage points on the left side (from the top view under the hood) one for the gears, one for the clutch. they seemed frozen with the shifter, but would move freely if I physically held the flat linkage going through to the tranny moved them by hand. I tinkered a bit and discovered that the bushing that was covering the straight post following my steering column lets say closest to the fire wall was really rough and looked cracked, and on the other side the small box that connected to the linkage and was attached to the steering column appeared to be leaking? after I manually tinkered with the linkage my shifter un froze, and she was shifting again? Because the trip to the car show was a bit far and didn't want to take the chance I went back home. but on the way back home she was shifting fine again? do you or does anyone else know what this box is? Has anyone else ever had this happen with these old 3 on the trees and whether or not it is an easy fix or a pain in the butt? I would not assume its the death because I did drive her home again. any help would be great pics can be shot if it would be helpful. I sent this as a reply message to Johnnie Okie, but wanted to mass post to see if someone else has encountered this, and if anyone can provide me with the repair, and or parts #s I need?
Thank you
-Mark

to rescue again my friend!! thank you so much, I unfortunately am on a root beer budget presently and was hoping it was a possible fix issue for now? could I buy repair parts for this? or am I going to have to do the floor shifter? I talked with an old timer yesterday, and he said the same thing you just said. I will do that but is there some place to buy rebuild/repair parts for now? plus I gotta say I am a bit attached to my 3 on the tree

Arnies response is correct. Adjust the shift gate per the manual. If the rubber bushings at the shift gate box (upper end of linkage) are worn they need to be replaced, they are Romen Noodle budget cheap. On the lower end of the shift rods at the point they connect to the transmission there should be a small spring and a washer behind the cotter key, this will help maintain tension on the shift linkage and also cuts vibration. Once the linkage is properly adjusted you should have little trouble with it. Us the online manual to obtain the correct information for adjustment.

I want to start off by saying thank you guys a lot for all the help you give us "green horns" of the culture. I pulled up the shop guide and will take a gander at what I got to do, I will definitely work a floor shifter into the budget if it means less stress though. thanks Arnie you know I already respectably call you the man! as well as you my friend 2blu you guys are a wealth of knowledge, and I only hope that the payback I can give you guys is getting my gal running great

You will learn when not to shift to avoid this problem. If you can't move the stick into 2nd or 3rd to get it loose, it's easy to do under the hood as you hsve found out.
Chevs of the 40s Part Number 365244 shift rod bushings for 49-57. $8.50 a set.

You are welcome.
It's an easy fix. It might still be a little sloppy but the bushings will help.
I seemed to have the problem mostly when shifting at a real slow speed from 1st to 2nd. Pulling it back down carefully through neutral (so you don't go back into 1st while rolling)would usually free it up without stopping.
You'll figure it out. Have fun!

Mark, these guys are again spot on. I remember driving these cars back in the 60s when I was in high school and experiencing the same thing (out on a date with dirty hands). I wish you had had my Phone number when this happened so I could have told you go on it's the nature of the thing. It is still not as bad as the vacuum shift!

You know something? now that you say it that way I do recall never having the issues I had yesterday, but did somewhat change up my shift habits yesterday. I typically don't, believe it or not, Shift the way I did I will usually California roll through a stop, but yesterday I put her in neutral! Maybe it was my fault and there's nothing wrong? The bushing near the Control shaft lever, was cracked, not on the linkage. I believe that it may not be a bushing, but almost a dust boot of sorts? the bushings now that I look at the pics on chev of the fortys, was the bushing pieces that connected on the linkage levers not at the top of the control shaft lever. I'm a dumbass it was probably that "way" I should be driving her maybe being a temper mental old coot! a lot of the old timers say, almost like superstition that every old car doesn't drive the same, they have the sweet spots

The thing to keep mind is we have all been there. Those things happen. Just be sweet to her and all will be good.

I frequently go out and stroke the left front fender of the 2 blu, and sweet talk her. Wife says life would be better if I did the same to her.

No need to lose the 3 in the tree .... get new bushings, readjust linkage with new bushings in place and you should be fine. However, these 3 in the tree cars were never designed for "speed shifting".

Of course Bob is right, but that shouldn't prevent you from enjoying your car. It might take a little longer to get showroom perfect, but they are just as much fun to drive in primer as they are in paint!

As the others have said, the bushings in the linkage need to be in good shape. You can take the shifter box off the steering coulmn and clean it out and check the spring inside to be sure it is not broken. Sometimes it helps to file the cap on the box to provide a better fit on the shifting shafts, if it is worn excessively. And fill it with a light grease.
