I found a guy that is selling chrome 6 volt alternators.
What would be a definite advantage to using an alternator over the original generator??
At the moment I forget the difference in the operation of the two , Old age, I guess??
The price was really good ,only $99, I'd seen then elsewhere for as much as $250
Thanks guys

I may be wrong, but I believe an alt will charge at idle where a gen won't.

Low idle charging is much improved with an alternator. I would like to see a link to the source of these.

A friend of mine was at the Spring Swap meet at Carlisle, Pa. It's BIG !
I had to work this year and couldn't attend.
But my friend talked to the guy selling them and got his business card. I should see my friend tonight for our first big cruise-in. Usually about 135-150 cars . I hope to get the information tonight.

The conversion of a 12v alternator to 6 v is a piece of cake. All you need is a 10SI alternator and a 6 volt regulator. Google 6v alternator conversion as there is lots of info and YouTube videos.

12 volts is the only way to go. If you are going to change the apperance of your engine compartment why don't you change the whole system to 12 volts? for improved performance, first of all the lights are brighter and you can start on a 6 volt starter and you have 9 volts going to points instead of 6 volts because when you start on 6 volts and 6 volts go to the coil you have no reserve power but when you have 12 volts and 9 volts going to the coil (a resistor is needed) you always have that EXTRA spark to start you car. and can use 12 volt accessories. That is why the auto industry went to 12 volts 6 volts is just not really enough for top performance.

I've said it before , I've had to Chev's with all original 6 volts systems and they have both started and been totally trouble free.
My car starts at a touch of the button, I couldn't ask for more . But with the generator with my lights on & at an IDLE it does drop down . Thats the only reason I thought of the 6 volt alternator , More constant voltage .

But with a well mantained ,properly wired 6 volt system no one should have any complaints.

totally agreed, the 6V system is taking the same cultural beating that the 216 6 does.
