It was suggested that I post on here also, I've posted on the Nomad site. I have a '56 Nomad, I'm doing a frame off and have broken several bolts on the hinges and tailgate strikes. Is there a good access to repair or replace the blind plates the bolts went into? Thanks

I just finished drilling and removing my old rusted tailgate hinge bolts today, Used an ezout after drilling all the way thru the center of each bolt. They came right out with a little elbow grease.
The plates on mine look ok and are loose, but i havent tried to remove them yet. They do need to be sandblasted and primered before they go backin. to keep the rust factor minimized.
I may even junk 'em and go to a modified hinge that is hidden inside the bottom of the tailgate. I'm sure someone sells something CNC'd for that by now...

Thanks, I was just looking at you LS1 photos. I'm doing a Nerd Rod frame and LS1 with 4L60E. Got a long way to go but no hurry. I've had mine since 1967. This should be the last time I build it....

I just saw someone doing this repair on a '55/6/7 Nomad or Wagon.
They said to cut a window in the metal under the hinges (underside of the body) so the nut plates could be accessed.
I know I had a screw for the striker plate on my (windowed) Sedan Delivery break off in 1982. I had to drill and tap the hole to the next larger size bolt. Luckily the striker plate went back on with no modifying.

Thanks, that what I have in mind. I didn't know if I was the only one to have this problem. I'm planning on cutting slots to get the blind plates out, then repair the slots after...

If it is possible, it would be best to weld a bolt to the broken screws. Then you can just use a wrench or rachet to remove the broken screws. There needs to be enough of the screw still there to weld to it without welding to the plate. The heat from the welding will help with breaking it loose as well. You can also spray some Kroil or SeaFoam penetrating oil in there to help as well. I've used that method on broken and frozen bolts and screws a lot and it has always worked.

Thanks for the ideas. I used PB Blaster, heat and all the regular methods til the rounded out or broke off. Now I'm going to drill, EZ out or retap if necessary. I have one of the plate for driver side strike that has fallen down into the cavity after I got the bolts out. I'll have to retrieve it in some manner. I'm planning on cutting a slot somewhere to gain access then repairing the slot. Thanks again for the input.

Thanks, I see you had your car for 30 years, I've had me "56 nimad since June 1967. I'm the second owner. Bought it when I was 16,from a company that bought it new for a salesman car. I gave $100 for it and drove it after I put a battery in it.
