I've always wondered the same thing. The '59, '60 and '61 all have that same type spring and other than maybe some stability and a little spring power, I don't see what the real purpose is. What I do know is, it is not the easiest spring to take out. The '62 and newer cars went to a different design. Other than the Diaphram Pressure Plate itself, I'm wondering if you have the correct leverage applied with the non-original set up.
