Look at the timing chain. I had a 72 350 that would idle normally most of the time, then stumble, but would always catch and run fine again. I noticed when letting off the gas to slow for a stop, it would do the same thing and I would get a pop. The timing chain and gears were worn which when I adjusted the timing it would be good when running, as the slack in the chain would be taken up, but when the engine slows the slack would show up and the timing would be off until it would correct itself again.
