Hmmm - Based on your description, it sounds like you have a 6 Cyl with the oil filter hanging off the exhaust manifold.

When I used to change oil in my 6 Cyl Bel Air, I seem to remember "sopping up" the excess in the filter canister with some paper towels.
It wasn't an extreme PIA (pain)to do, but did require that extra step.

If you're not doing something like this now, I can see why your oil could be blackened sooner by old oil contamination. Make sense?
