It is easiest to do with the transmission out. It makes it much easier to get at the top oil seal.

On a K10, you can normally drop the oil pan without lifting the motor (or not lifting it much). On a C-10 (that has a larger crossmember), the engine must be lifted to get the oil pan out. An engine crane usually isn't necessary, you can loosen the engine mounts and then pry up on one side of the motor with a 2x4 to get it out.

Loosen all the mains and force the crank down carefully, this will help you get at the upper shell.

The lip of the seal should point inwards towards the inside of the motor, or towards the oil. The ends of the seals should be offset from the parting line a little bit, to stop oil from seeping through the parting line.

You should also put a bit of non-hardening permatex sealer on the crosshatch area of the below picture:
