    In response to Rob Daniels

I'd be more inclined to think it's the front bearing in the transmission causing the problem. It it's badly worn, it will make a loud whining or "screaming" noise when in gear. And, since it rides on the output shaft, which is the 3rd gear, the bearing could be worn enough to allow movement of the gear away from the slider allowing it to pop out of gear. I'm assuming you are running a stock 3 speed.
