Distributor shaft end-play is a non-issue. When the engine is running, the shaft is held upwards against the bottom of the case with quite a bit of pressure. this is because, when the helical gear on the camshaft is turning it, it pushes upward on the shaft gear against the opposing force of the oil pump.

The only time it could be a problem, is when setting the initial static timing before starting for the first time. Those forces aren't present then, and the shaft could drop to the bottom of its movement and rotate a couple of degrees on the gear.
