In the later 5 speed transmissions GM began using an integrated slave/bearing arrangement; it works OK but failure rate seems about the same. The difference is, with GM's external slave setup, you can change the slave without removing the transmission. With the integrated style...you guessed it, transmission is coming out for slave replacement. Last one I did was on an NV4500, even worse out of a 3500HD model so it had the longer tailshaft housing with the drum parking brake setup. They're about 250 lbs. dry...

One upside to the integrated setup of course is that it gets rid of the fork/pivot assembly which is another wear area in the system.
