As the others have said, the bushings in the linkage need to be in good shape. You can take the shifter box off the steering coulmn and clean it out and check the spring inside to be sure it is not broken. Sometimes it helps to file the cap on the box to provide a better fit on the shifting shafts, if it is worn excessively. And fill it with a light grease.
