This is an age-old, classic Chevy "noise" and that shop is just flat trying to screw 'im out of four grand.
Tell him to go ahead and drive the truck home and then put a new flywheel in it, as his is cracked.
He can just back the transmission/transfer case rearward, as a unit, about 4", which will allow enough room to slide a new one up and in. The slightly protruding "lip" at the center of the flywheel goes to the rear.
