New to the site and have a very puzzling problem with my 92 305 engine. I replaced the intake gasket because I had a coolant leak. I reinstalled everything back as it was. Now the truck will run fine at idle, no missing skipping etc . but when I start to take off it has very little power, just sputters along Now let me tell you guys what i have done and please don't think i am just replacing parts to find the problem. I am getting the truck ready for my son to Drive. I replaced the distrib. cap rotor button, ignition module, wires, front coolant sensor, timing was set TDC(o). And still the same problem. Thought it might be the catalytic converter, remove it and still the same. Take in mind that the truck ran fine before I started to replace the gasket. I also replaced the filters, O-ring(injectors), and the diaphragm on the throttle body. the spring inside was fine. also the fuel filter. I am not getting any service engine light so I'm not sure if it is a sensor problem. Fellas's any help with this would greatly be appreciated.

a/c oil

I have replaced a/c compressors and just put in the amount of oil I pour out. I am working on an 88 single cab truck and I believe the system takes 8 ounces. The whole system is new except the compressor (hoses, evaporator, condenser, and accumulator) Can I just add 4oz to the compressor and put the other 4 in the accumulator or should I put it somewhere else? One other question, this was an r12 system, I am putting r134a in instead. I know it takes 80-85% the amount of r134a but my sticker is gone. Does anyone know how much the system takes?

Failed Smog, High NoX

I'm a newbie to this forum and, have a question. Today i took my 95 Silverado 5.7L TBI to get smoged, and it failed horribly. The results were: @15mph HC(PPM) Measured:187 Max:115; CO(%) Measured:0.65 Max:0.43; NOx(PPM) Measured:2059 Max:699; @25mph HC(PPM) Measured:190 Max:67; CO(%) Measured:0.69 Max:0.74; NOx(PPM) Measured:2104 Max:601. The tech told me that the timing was off, and that it was missing the thermostatic air cleaner (witch I thought were only for carbureted engines) the timing I will look into and adjust if necessary, but the "thermac" as they call it I don't think this truck even had one, but from the research I have been doing since i got home from the shop it seems that the thermac would have little to no effect on the NOx readings, but the timing would. IF anyone here could please help me, and point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. Thank-You.

Sqeaky, squeaky, squeaky..

I don't think there's a bushing under my front end that isn't squeaking. Just at a glance I can see the torsion bar bushing wanting to push out. Was wondering how hard to rebuild a front end it is and whether or not ball joints and bushings or just bushings? It's not lifted, no huge tires, and doesn't see any extreme use. It's my daily driver on rural roads. I guess ball joints require a press? I've changed them on other vehicle that were bolt-ins.

1991 G20 - antilock rotor versus plain rotor

I finally got around to swapping out my warped rotor on my van today. It has the usual '91 deal of a RWAL system in it that who knows if it works.

The used rotor I pulled ages ago was off a '93 G10 shorty, and it had the ring inside it for antilock brakes. Now I looked on Rock Auto and I thought the interchange was for all 71-95 G20 vans. I mean what would they change? But it turns out in typical GM fashion, they did, and checking again I find a second part number that is only for 93-95 G10/G20.

Now it goes on and seems tight but I could not get the cotter pin in the hole. Eventually since I had two castle nuts I ground the slots down in it so it would work.

But the difference is the anti-lock brake rotor is about 1/4 or 3/8 inch taller - and the spindle is also. That's why I couldn't get the pin in place.

So I got it on and I just drove 12 miles on it, but it groans a lot and was fairly warm when I checked it. Maybe because it's too tight, although I backed it off some and made sure it spun easily, and maybe because the bearing is moving around some on my spindle.

It will get me to the u-pick to find the right one, and maybe on down to my swap meet in the afternoon, but that's it. And to top it off while there's no more signs of brake shaking, it pulls to the left for some reason.

I wouldn't think it would make that much difference, but apparently the spindle is tapered and it's just enough difference to make it unhappy.

Or of course maybe the bearing is just shot, it was a used piece and I got it down south, where they don't rot and someone might drive a car 300,000 miles until the wheels fall off.
This is in reference to my 4.3 chevy truck. Does the IAC valve have O ring or a flat fiber washer on the new part ? If it comes with one might have found the problem. Thanks for all the info I got from this sight. I say thanks if not I will try some more questions. The tranny was no good when I bought the truck so I replaced it with a used one from a salvage yard.

My problem? I don't have an inspection cover. There wasn't one on the truck when I bought it and the used one didn't come with one either.

I cannot seem to find any source for a used one online - seems like they must bolt on differently with the newer engines. Mine is still the old second gen small block 5.7 liter. Any suggestions?

Engine kills intermitantly, radio and lights don't, no codes

"96 suburban 350. I just purchased my first GMC pickup. It's a 1997 GMC 4.3L Auto with 175k. It runs great but after driving it for 30 miles and going on the highway my check engine light came on. I had it read and it says that it's code P0420 and I have a rattle from the exhaust at idle. Should I assume it's just the cat and order a new one to have installed or could it be something else. I'm not sure what the best course is and I don't have a lot of $ to throw at it (bought as a cheap DD).
