First time poster here with a question about a power steering conversion I'm undertaking.

The car is a 62 Impala 409 and it was originally a manual steering car. I picked up a conversion kit from Ecklers that had everythng needed except the pump. The pump I got elsewhere (Late Great Chevy if I recall correctly).

That said today we started the install and everything was going ok. We did have to do a little "massaging" to get the steering box to clear the radiator.

The real problem started when we actually went to install the pump. The brackets connected just fine but when you lay the pump in there is no way to install the pulley. There isn't enough clearance by the steering box.

I can tell you that the steering box supplied is a Borgeson 600. As far as the engine compartment goes everything is stock (brackets, pumps, radiator, etc). Car does have the original generator setup.

I did do a bit of looking on these forums and elsewhere on the web and see I'm not the first to have a problem. I just can't seem to find a definitive solution. In a perfect world I'd move the steering box about an 1" forward.

A few people seem to have had no problem installing, others talk about not using the plate provided to mount to the frame rail and yet others suggest using a 500 steering box.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
