Hey everyone,

I replaced the gasket below my distributor and noe the engine wont start, i brought it to TDC first and marked the location where the rotor was pointing, reinstalled the vap, i did not remove the spark plug wires from the cap. Now she wont start. Where to start searching?

If this is a 96 or newer, disregard what I'm about to say. You need a scan tool.

Are you sure you were on TDC compression stroke? If the rotor is under the terminal with the wire going to #1 cylinder, it should start. If it's under #6 you're 180° out. Check the firing order. 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

Does the pointy end need to be under spark plug wire #1 or the dull end?

Okay, then i installed it backwards lol, gonna pull it out again and get the engine to TDC and hope she fires up. I can re use the gasket right?

Once you get it started, you’ll likely need to set the cam retard angle with a scan tool. There’s instructions on how to do that in the FAQ section in his forum.

I do not have the scan tool, will i be able to do it by hearing?

On a 1994 TBI the timing is set with a timing light. It is newer trucks that are set with a scan tool.

To set the timing you will need to unplug the set timing wire and on a 1994 it is in the cab by the computer.

Set the timing to zero degrees BTDC if it is a small block.

You need to unplug that once it is running to set it exact. You need to get it running first. Roll the crank to TDC compression stroke and get the rotor as close as you can to under the #1 plug wire. You will have to mark something pointing to where the rotor is besides the distributor body and rotate the distributor to where it lines up. That should get you close enough to start, then you need to do what chevytech said.

So for finding tdc on the compression stroke, whilst holding my finger on the spark plug hole it should start pushing my finger off right? And then keep vranking till the timing mark on the wheel lines up with the toothed indicator?

Yep. Use a ratchet or breaker bar. The starter will go way too fast. You may need someone to put their finger over the hole and watch the mark. The easiest way I have found to get a ratchet on the crank is take the skid plate off, lay on the ground, and go up through from the bottom. I think a small block is a 5/8 socket and big block is 3/4. Make sure you can read the numbers on the pointer. 0 isn't exactly in the middle.

I forgot 1 detail, she runs on propane gas (LPG). Will she start at 0* BTDC?

Ok i got to TDC on 1# and lined the spark plug wire up with the rotor, she still wont fire?

TDC of the compression stroke, or TDC of the exhaust stroke?

Check the terminals in the wiring connectors you unplugged and see if they need to be tighten up to make good contact.

You have the spark plugs wired on the cap 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 in the clockwise direction yes? If yes, do you have spark?

Just checked, got no spark. Could this be the ignition module or ignition coil?
