I ordered a front sway bar for the 56 this morning. Has anybody got any feed back on how it effects the ride on their 56-57.
I ordered a 1-1/8" bar with all the hardware.

Just put that on a stock 55 Belair with radials and gas shocks, certainly helped the cornering. Had to be careful drilling the holes to mount it.

You'll be amazed at the difference. I didn't double nut the links and one of them came off. I knew it on the first corner I went around. Put it on with the wheels on ramps or blocks and get the links straight up and down.

I second acardon's comments. You will notice driveability improvements immediately. I highly reccomend this for one of the first things you do when considering suspension upgrades. It's a relatively cheap instant improvement.

Cool! It says it will be here next week so I hope to be off my 6-12hr shifts by then, I hope!
Dad is wanting his car back and I'm wanting the 64 SS back.

I got the turn signals fixed for him on the 56 last week. The little tabs on the back side of the steering wheel wouldn't knock them off after a turn so I tweaked them some and have the signals working again.

Driving it at highway speed 70-80 MPH it's a handful to say the least. I hope it will help it out and make it a little more pleasing to drive.

Hmm, what is the issue at that speed, the sway bar only affects handling making lane changes or handling curves. Front alignment should be set up with at least 3 degrees positive caster, and of course no steering play or worn front and rear suspension components for safe handling at high speeds.

A question: Is +3 degrees caster doable with the stock upper control arms?

Also, I agree the sway bar will NOT fix suspension/steering problems that I would associate with a car being "Driving it at highway speed 70-80 MPH it's a handful to say the least."

I'd be looking at ball joints, bushings, tie rods, out of round tires, etc. The sway bar would be the icing on the cake.

Your are right, with stock arms it can be tough to get the desirable caster and still maintain reasonable camber settings, I find it even more difficult if the car has a nose down stance. Still an effort should be made to set it up best possible, seems like alignments are low on the priority list for a lot of car owners. One reason is alignment shops shy away from old cars and wind up just setting the toe, we do the whole set up using the Longacre gages.

I guess you guy's never make turns at speed are change lanes are have idoits pull out in front of you. Just normal driving! The car drives great I didn't know the bar was for sitting still I thought it was for when driving it!

Agreed, but I cruise the Interstates here at 75, my 51 is dead sure at that speed, but M11 front end, power rack and pinion, disc brakes, CE rear suspension and that desirable alignment done, is the reason.

I was simply trying to be helpful by suggesting that if your car "is a handful at least" (your description) at 70-80 mph, something is materially wrong with the steering/suspension, and that the sway bar won't fix it.

Perhaps my 'hands' are more experienced

The car is a handful at speed when taking turns. That's why I want a bar on it. As far as driving it you can let go of the wheel and it tracks just fine. But taking a turn at any good speed is a handful. It feels like it's going to flip! Which I know it's not but man it feels bad to the point it's scary!

Ok, clearer picture of what it's doing, in which case I would suggest a rear anti sway bar also plenty of bolt in kits out there, have one in my 51.

I suggest you look at your shocks and springs while you are at it. Sway bars should improve roll. But, "...going to flip..." and "...scary" is extreme (with or with out sway bars).

Just to be clear, I never said don't add the sway bars. I'm just suggesting that there MAY be more 'wrong' than sway bars alone can fix. I can't say for sure w/o driving your car. You are the best judge of what needs to be done. I can only suggest things to look at.

Just trying to be helpful.

Yes I agree it needs both but right now I will settle for the front and see how it does then get the rear so I know which one did the most good.

I put my CPP front sway bar on last year and I must say that the difference it made is incredible.

There is a flat curve in the road about a half mile from my house, so I am very familiar with the feel of the car on that curve.

The first time I took the curve with the sway bar installed, I felt as though a huge force was pressing down on my front end - keeping it nearly level for the first time ever on that curve. I never expected that big a difference.
It feels more like a new car hugging the road.

This is what I want out of MZ Edna. I took it out on the Charlotte speedway back in Oct and it was scary to say the least.

Driving it on the road isn't near that bad but I want it to feel better than it does.

Yes it was. I was going in my 71 C-10 with 6.0 in it but then my daughter & grandson wanted to go so we took the 64 Impala SS up Friday spent the day then took it over to my dad's and swapped it for the 56 to bring it home and do the work on it that I'm doing now.
Drove the 56 just now and got the signals and steering all lined back up. They work good now.Now just waiting on the bar to get here.

For the rear stability, a set of cal-tracs can be almost as effective as a rear sway bar and the cal-tracs make launches extremely effective.

If Andy is 57, Dad gotta be 70 something at least. If he is doing 70mph hard maneuvers, point out to him the sway bar will transfer weight nearly instantaneously to the rear. Be sure he "feels out" the new set up before he tries his trick driving. My car had the typical body roll too. I put a sway bar on it and have 180'd the car twice in wet weather. Not something you want to find out mid spin.

Yes I will inform him of the characteristics before he drives it. Not that he drives it that fast just me.
Dad is 92 by the way. He only drives it to the doctor and drug store and WalMart.

I got the bar today. Anybody got any pointers on installing it? I watched one video so far of a 56 but it didn't show much.

It's got the CPP 506 box in it. it was in it when we bought the car.

Not a lot of info out there on sway bars for 56 Chevy's!
I found one good video but it doesn't show the install.

Hi Andy. Anti-sway bars tend to affect the other end of the car as much or more than the one they are on.
Big rear anti roll bars will take some turn in out of the front.

Better shocks is probably the answer for lane wobbles, makes a big difference.

Cool to see you passing that Mopar around the outside.

The sway bar will really make it fun to drive on curvy roads. I added the front and rear even after being advised it would make it very stiff. To me it isn`t overly stiff and it is a lot of fun to drive on those curves. I can take most roads at the 75mph limit with no problem.

FWIW, I have a Hellwig 1 1/8 inch diameter front anti sway and an Addco 7/8 rear bar as well as stiffer front and rear springs. I also have after market front upper and lower A frames. This summer I got a chance to drive the track at the Corvette Motorsports track in my '57. I was very happy with the handling of my car and I believe the anti sway bars are a big part of that.

Bar is in and the ride is much better what I can tell. The only thing now is you slip around in the seat even with the lap belts!

But it was much easier than I thought it would be drilling the holes.
