Picked up a new toy today! Saw someone on duallyscene posting a craigslist link from Dallas/Fort Worth area and I immediately fell in lust. Here's a couple of the seller's pics: ![]() ![]() So you might be asking yourself, what is Richard doing posting about his 1958 dually in the 88-98 section? Because the body is sitting on a 1994 C3500 chassis (with a 6/8 static drop), complete with 6.5TD and NV4500 5-speed. ![]() ![]() The dash has even been modified to accept the '94 cluster, and the '94 tilt column has been installed. The guy that built it (Chris D in Burleson) used the factory '94 harnesses to wire the truck up. ![]() It runs and drives, and has current registration using year-of-manufacture plates. Has some issues that need to get resolved for it to be a reliable driver, and it's definitely in the "rat" category but man this truck is seriously cool. I'll be posting updates when I can; my free time these days is severely limited so progress will probably be slow! Richard

No way Jose! No wrecker unit for this one. This truck is for PLAY, not work. ![]() Put the fenders back on, removed the late model center caps (I think it gives it a stealthier look) and peeled the "Monster" logo sticker off the rear window. All little stuff but I think it helps. ![]() ![]() Whatta face! ![]() ![]() Then took it down the road to add some more diesel, don't know if the gauge is accurate yet and didn't wanna trust it. Actually running pretty good despite the engine issues. Need to grab my GPS and see how close the speedo is, seems way off, reading too slow. Richard

I think it's hilarious that you are now a 6.5L owner Will you stick it out with the diesel for awhile, or are you planning an engine swap already?I like the truck, but you've got to do something about that steering column and wheel..... the wheel just looks way out of place, to me.

454 - we'll see about the diesel. It was the ONE thing about the truck that almost had me blowing it off completely. It doesn't run right, possible bad injection pump, but hard to say without some troubleshooting. Definitely agreed on the steering wheel. I'll keep the tilt column but the stock wheel is going; I've got another Grant black leather/aluminum wheel just like the one in my '94 ext cab that I'll put in and see how I like that. John - yep the stack is straight pipe, no muffler. This truck is all kinds of loud. He also included a turndown that I could install instead so that it dumps under the truck, but what fun is that? I'm not usually a "stacks are cool" kinda guy, but the fact that this one is rusty and decrepit, makes me love it!Richard

I expected that you'd keep the column (I would), but could you paint it another color, to make it blend in more? That 6.5L is all mechanical isn't it? No PMD?

very nice truck. I love that generation nose. Also love the 6.5l. Hardest part is the IDM but other than that the engine is pretty bulletproof. Pretty basic. Best of luck and cant wait to see it complete.

Naw, just working my a$$ off! No time for anything else...I've done very little other than swap out the stock '94 steering wheel for a smaller Grant unit (same exact black leather/3 spoke aluminum as in my '94 ext cab; I had an extra) so it doesn't sit so close to the shift knob. As far as that knob goes, if you're a fingertip shifter it works great, if you're the "rest the palm on it" it's definitely a shocker! ![]() Oh, and I noticed the IAT was installed with teflon tape, it wasn't much, but I removed it and cleaned up the threads just in case. Didn't seem to make any difference. Next on the list will probably be buying front tires as the ones on it are P-series standard load tires! They're also only 28" tall, I might go to a 30" tire if it will fit in there - thinking a 215/85/16 to go a little taller and a little narrower, in an E load to support the diesel, and should add an inch to the ground clearance of the lower control arms. Currently they are really in harm's way. I love low, but I also don't like to drive slow! Also need to replace all the flat glass as every bit of it is busted to hell! Seller provided a box of goodies - new window regulators, new channel that goes between the vent window and window glass, window channel rubber, and a few other minor items. Other balloons I'm floating to see if they sink: - Talking with a friend of mine about bagging it. Nothing crazy, just a straightforward job to raise it a little bit for highway driving, but designed to be firm at low ride height so it still rides well when dropped. I hate seeing bagged trucks that have to be lifted ALL the way up just to have good ride quality. My control arms are already narrowed so steering when low isn't an issue. - Considering swapping it over to '93 mechanical injection. There's a few engines for sale locally that if I had the room to keep them, I'd have already bought the stuff. As it is, I can barely squeeze past the '94 ext cab to get to my toolboxes. Richard

Richard, are you planning on sticking with the rat rod look or where you planning on cleaning it up and paint? From your description with the rusted stack sounds like you are staying with the rat rod and just fixing mechanical and drivability. My only complaint is the bed, as in it is non exsistant. Any plans to put a real usable bed in there?

For now definitely planning on keeping it rough, one reason is I love how it looks, other reason is it needs a lot of bodywork before it could be painted and I don't care to tie up a bunch of downtime in it. Rather get it running/driving right and enjoy it. As far as the bed, I do intend on making some panels to be able to use it. With that large notch in place, best I'll be able to do will be front and rear compartments around the notch, just something so I can carry misc. items. Maybe in the future a cover for the notch itself, so that the bed appears "completed." Got the front wheels popped off now and heading down to the tire shop. Richard

to bad i dont think the Michelin supper single tires are in a low enough profile for it think a nice fat wide rubber in rear would look smooth. think few rattle cans will help clean it up for time being give it that good ole boy, red neck rat rod look. she has a lot of possibilities. looks good and with minor cost can be a fun ride from looks of it. i cant say i seen a dualy like it before but i like.

One plus to the '58 body is an enormous amount of hood -height- clearance, a downside would be a narrower engine bay. I'm tempted to say a 12V should fit but not having ever measured one out, I'd be nervous to bet money on it. ![]() Richard

Width is never an issue on a 12 valve, it is always the length of the motor because it is an inline 6. However since it is roughly the same size as a Chevy inline 6, is suspect it would fit just fine.

454 would be great... The rat rod look would be nice to keep, flat black paint, some pin striping, foux patina, it would look clean... The hardest part is making it not look like a hodge podge of different era parts, I think the original gauge cluster would look better.... but thats me, I'm a stickler... The truck would definitely look better a little bit higher off the ground, but since it isn't 4x4 you know she wont be going off road lol.... The bags are great, we have them on our 1 ton ford, and it really helps to smooth out the ride, as much as possible.

Wow is it that loud in person? I think I'd want to quiet it down a bit. Also, is the back end lower than the front, or is that an illusion? Something I've thought about trying on my Buick (horrible non-original paint and some rust) is brushing on a coat or two of Penetrol. It's an old product, and I think it's a basically a varnish that's thinned out with an oil. It will dry, and should give the paint/metal protection against further corrosion. I'd guess that it would need to be done once a year.

Yes it's that loud...and I love it. The camera is inside the garage so it's acting like sort of a sound chamber, but make no mistake, this truck is obnoxious. It is sitting at a slight backwards rake at the moment since I removed the passenger car-rated 225/70/16 front tires and replaced them with E load BFG Commercial T/A 215/85/16 which are roughly 2" taller. But just like most trucks, the front wheel openings are taller than the rears, so that gives the illusion of the rear being significantly lower than it really is. Richard

Lol I love that puff of black smoke, thats hilarious... MAN you could make that dually such a sleeper, and still have the ability to haul trailers around. I must say though, I've never been a fan of lowered dually's... as a person who's hauled trailers for a living, it totally defeats the purpose... just like when idiots lift trucks waaaaay too high lol

aggiecowgirl - with the airbag suspension I plan to do, setup to maintain a firm ride at low ride heights (instead of having to jack it to the sky just to firm up the bags) I should still be able to haul a trailer with no problems at all. The bracing around the frame notch tends to make a great spot for a gooseneck hookup.. But make no mistake, this truck is purely for play. It serves no functional purpose other than to make me smile.John - I think stacks are out of place on a lot of trucks, but this one is just too cool. Probably because it's not 8" polished stainless with a mitre-cut tip... ![]() Tom - it's probably safe to say they are less than fond of me, but that probably started when I first rolled up in the wrecker, and cemented it in when I arrived with the black extended cab. Richard, I'm a stack-hater of sorts. Hater is too strong, dis-liker because of their overuse on late model diesels somewhat modifies my feelings a little better. But your new project truck wears one well. <shrug?> I think we're on the same page there. I know you're not fond at all of diesels, and 6.2/6.5's in particular, but you do have a ride that does that drivetrain combo very well. Hope you get it sorted out.

Ya know, although the injection system needs work, the truck is marginally "neighborhood" driveable - so I do run it around on short errands. This morning I took it to the bank and the convenience store, and drove it all through the subdvisions over here. It's kind of funny the reactions it gets, particularly divided among - shocker - racial lines. ![]() It seems most white folks in my neighborhood are too good to even SEE the truck. They can't bear to even turn their heads at the sound of it. It even ran off a pack of door-to-door religious solicitors that were just leaving my next door neighbor's place, right at the perfect time for me to fire it up chugging black smoke and clanging the weather cap on the stack. Awesome! My black and Hispanic neighbors generally seem to like it, smiling and sometimes waving. The Hispanic guys building the new houses down the street like it too, packs of grins and pointing. Hell, a black kid that looked like he may have been all of 10 years old, mowing a lawn, gave me the thumbs up. ![]() Oh, and I'm sure the people at my bank are totally perplexed. I can just imagine what's going through their minds. "But he's depositing a paycheck, he has a JOB and money in his account; what's he doing driving THAT?" If nobody at all noticed it, wouldn't make a difference to me - but I do get a kick out of the people's reactions that DO notice it. Richard

Richard Sounds like my truck rednecks like it for its size and 4x4 but hate my subs in the back. Black people and Hispanics love the subs but could care less for the mud grips and 4x4. They just love that I can rattle a call center around from across the highway. (got in trouble at work for it when pulling in). Personally I like your truck a beater/rat rod is a run project to keep busy if you get bored and is a stand out. I hate blending in.

Richard, it's hard to comment on that without taking the thread on a nose dive, but I think I have somewhat of a handle on it. The truck is uncouth. Yeah there's something about putting your foot down in the footwell of that old style cab just before stepping out, then realizing you have to be careful stepping out because the rockers are only a couple inches off the ground... It was cool you were able to make it over here and visit. We could have taken the truck on a longer trip if we felt like gambling on walking back for the wrecker. The mechanical injection pump and other parts have already shipped so they'll be here soon; on the other hand the time and energy to do the work is another story.Richard

WoW! Way cool rig. Lot's of potential here and alot of ways to go. I know you aren't crazy about this particular diesel but can those issues be worked out to where you could live with it? I don't know much about them but it seems to be a love or hate deal with those who've owned them. A Duramax would be killer in this rig but then you'd have all of the dash and wiring issues to conquer. On the appearance, I think it would be cool to have white or red painted rims with a contrasting red or white pinstripe on the lip. The right tires will round it out and help make the truck. If you want to dress it up a bit more without going all out. You could refinsh and detail the grill and trim pieces leaving the rest of the paint as is. Someone mentioned Penetrol to preserve the patina. A spare would be kinda cool on the rear fender, but if not I'd graft in the patch eliminating the depression. A flat black blend would be finished enough if you stay with the 'rat rod' theme. This truck would look killer though in a flawless Hot Rod Black by SEM Products if you ever decided to go beyond the rat theme. However you do it, once you finish up the bed up on this rig, I want to see some pics with your bobber loaded up. This rig would make an excellent movie set prop. Heck, you could damn near make it a character with the right story line.

Axelrod - I've got most of the parts in hand now to convert the 6.5 to mechanical injection, which is vastly more reliable than the electronic setup. That should solve some of my gripes about the 6.5. I actually like the looks pretty much as-is, though a nice flat black job is something I'd considered as I think it would look sharp. Getting rid of the spare tire fender is on the list, too. The "right" tires is kind of tough as you have to run a fairly heavy duty tire to do a good job of handling the weight of that diesel and NV4500; that's why I picked those BFG Commercial T/A's for the front, and will probably do something similar in the back once I get the suspension knocked out. Won't be any pictures with the bobber in the back...it lives in Japan now! Pat - what!! Yeah, they all EVENTUALLY get sold, but some I kept for a really long time. For example, the white '92 extended cab was mine for over 9 years(!) and the black '94 extended cab was mine for over 5 years. (Yes, it's sold, just let it go the other day.) So a couple days ago the '58 took its rightful place INSIDE the garage instead of parked in the driveway, and is my ONLY vehicle at this time! Good thing I have the company wrecker. ![]() Richard

Dang bub. You've thinned the herd big time. You must have a master plan for something cool.

No master plan...just no room in the garage and I spend so much time in the wrecker that there's almost zero time for anything else. The black extended cab would sit in the garage until the battery would go dead... Didn't have any business buying the '58 but it was too cool to pass up. I already use it for short trips in the neighborhood like running to the bank or going to grab breakfast, stuff like that. Once I get it to a more reliable condition I'll at least be able to cruise it on my one night off a week. ![]() Richard

Surprised to see the '94 go away. Figured that one might get treated to something crazy, (like I'm doing to mine), someday. I also thought the grey 3500HD project might hang for awhile. That truck with the Alcoa wheels was really quite attractive. Not surprised it sold quickly, as I think the current Chevy truck lineup has a hole in it with nothing to replace the venerable GMT400 3500HD's. So all in your only tie-in to the 88-98 forum currently is the chassis/drivetrain underneath the '58? Anyone what to make any odds on how long that will last?

The girlfriend's '93 is still a depdendent of mine - just spent almost $1K on it doing idler arm, pitman arm, front tires, all 4 shocks, alignment, some other misc. stuff to it. I knew it needed the idler & pitman but what brought it all to the forefront was one of the front tires separated a belt. She was driving it like that. I took a ride with her in it and immediately freaked out at how bad the front was shaking...of course it's smooth as glass, now. Just needs a muffler. Original had a couple small rust holes around the 176K mark but now at over 200K it's gotten loud, which she doesn't like.Richard

Yep. I was enjoying that truck quite a bit and driving it everywhere. I flip-flopped numerous times on rebuilding it after it was recovered; in the end I couldn't stand to look at it anymore so that's why the direction changed at the last minute from "rebuild custom" to "rebuild mostly stock" and let it go. OK fellas don't kill me but it's for sale. I have to admit I don't have time to jack with this truck. Seems like all I do is work, 6 twelve hour shifts a week. Truck is for sale. Yeah it's got a couple bugs to work out but you know it's sick as hell...somebody buy it so it doesn't just sit in my garage. ![]() Houston TX - LINK TO CRAIGSLIST AD - > http://houston.craigslist.org/cto/3363704579.html And yeah I'm asking more than I paid Chris D for it back in June but I also spent nearly a grand on the stuff to convert it to mechanical injection including a rebuilt pump - all still sitting in a box, plus the (rare) V8 hood emblem and Viking 60 fender emblems, and the brand new BFG Commercial T/A front tires. Actually taking a decent loss on it at the asking price but that's how it goes right? Richard

Oh well it makes room in the driveway for something else. That rig sure would look good painted up and parked in a truck show. Sheeeeeee's different. Come on Rich. What's really up your sleeve?

Was hard to tell if he was a flipper or a real enthusiast, I think he was real, but you never know. Flippers talk a good line. Either way I don't really care...this truck needs enough TLC that it'll break a flipper, or give an enthusiast plenty of things to do so that they can call it their own. In the meantime, I've replaced it with something I can actually DRIVE, since I haven't owned a personal vehicle for several months now - just been driving the company truck and the Dodge Magnum I've been fixing up for my girlfriend. So the day after selling the '58, I picked up... ![]() 2006 Chrysler 300C SRT8. ![]() Richard
