Hey Guys,

I am going to be rebuilding the front end on an '80 K30.

Before I tie up the bay, can you please inform me on the size of the spanner socket used to remove the front wheel bearings??

I don't think I have it - and I don't want to find out the hard way.

Thanks for the advice....

I would pull the lockinghubs first to see what kind of nut there is

anyway it's a bigger socket than the 1/2 & 3/4 tons

edit : checked the ones i have: 1/2 & 3/4 is 2" ID , 1-ton is 2 1/4" ID , both are 4-prongs

Hi G,

Thank you for the feedback!

I was reading some fo the tool mfg's propoganda and it did nothing more than confuse me.

Some say the 3/4 and 1 ton are the same and I am leaning towards "no, they aren't".

I think your 2 1/4" is the tool with the 4 prongs.
Wish they sold these darn things in a set - so I am prepared for anything that comes along.

I hope your A/C project is going well!

What type of front axle do you have? Is it a Dana 60? You need to know this if you are to call around to find your specific spindle socket.

Autozone carries most of the 4wd spanner sockets - so you can just buy several and return the ones that don't work.

Napa carries Lisle tool brand, their list of FWD tools is:

They are typically available at most Napa stores.

Just did my Dana 60 and that exact socket was not anywhere - on the shelf.

This what is required:

4WD Spindle Nut Socket OTC Tool 7158 Dana 50 60 1 Ton Front Axle Wheel Bearing

Notice that the tabs are set back within the socket walls.

I ended up buying one with external tabs from Advance (maybe $6) and modified it with a file. It just barely worked.

Thanks Chenm,

At a 165 ft lbs of torque, I would be concerned that the socket (if modified) might only work 'once". LOL

Thank you for the OTC part number - I just ordered it... one petpeve of mine is not having the proper tools when a job begins and then you have to spend half the day hunting on down...

I think that OTC 7158 is the same as Lisle 27900
sure do look the same as well.

Well, now I can schedule the work and know it won't take me a week to wrap it up.

You might want to read this (carefully, it's run-on and poorly written but the torque specs are all there). I tried to make it a bit easier to read by highlighting only what applies to 1980 K30's.

EXC. HUBS W/MONROE AUTO. TYPE LOCKING HUB

1.Remove dust cap or locking hub, lockwasher and outer locknut.

2.Using suitable spanner wrench, torque inner adjusting nut to 50 ft.. lbs. while rotating hub.
Back off adjusting nut and re-torque to 50 ft lbs on 1985---87 models with manual hubs, or 35 ft lbs on all other models, while rotating hub.

3.Back off adjusting nut again just enough to free bearing on 1986---87 models with manual hubs, or 3/8 of a turn on all other models.
4.On 1980---84 K10---20/1500---2500 vehicles, proceed as follows:
a.On 1980 models, assemble adjusting nut lock by aligning nearest hole in lock with adjusting nut pin. Install outer locknut and torque to 80 ft. lbs.
b.On 1981---84 models, assemble drag sleeve retainer washer over the axle shaft and against bearing adjusting nut. The tang on the inside diameter of this washer is assembled in the keyway of the spindle. Assemble and tighten outer locknut to 160---205 ft. lbs.

5.On 1980---84 K30/3500 vehicles, proceed as follows:a.On 1980---81 models, assemble lockwasher and locknut, then torque locknut to 65 ft. lbs. Bend one ear of lockwasher at least 30°over inner adjusting nut, and the other ear at least 60°over outer locknut.
b.On 1982---84 models, assemble drag sleeve retainer washer over axle shaft and against bearing adjusting nut. The tang on the inside diameter of this washer is assembled in the keyway of the spindle. Assemble and tighten outer locknut to 160---205 ft. lbs.
6.On 1985---87 models, assemble drag sleeve retainer washer. Ensure tang on inside diameter of washer passes onto slot in spindle and hole in washer aligns with locknut pin. Move adjustment nut as necessary to align pin, then torque locknut to 160 ft. lbs.
7.On all vehicles, check to ensure all hub assemblies have .001---.010 inch endplay.
8.Install dust cap or locking hub.

Bottom line - after seating the bearings with 2 torque and release procedures, you rotate the wheel once more and do the final torque. It's not nearly 160 ft/lbs (in your case it's only 65 ft/lbs)

Thank you very much Chen!

That's what I get for referencing a '79 service manual!

Well, at least I have the correct spanner now!
Throw it in the drawer and I might use it in the next 10 years! LOL

Not too many Dana 60 front ends around here....
