I am looking @ a 62 impala with a factory 3 speed on the column. If I should want to go to a Muncie 4 speed, what problems would I encounter other than a shifter, ie. front and rear spline count--length of trans---would the clutch have to be changed? Thanks--new member here.---Lee |

I've done this swap. The main thing is drive shaft length. The rest was good to go!Don't forget the hole you must cut in the floor for the shifter.....

No Arnie, They are not good to go. The 4 speed driveshaft is different than the stock 3 speed. That's why late great 4 speed driveshafts are so expensive,so sought after and so hard to find. They are different. Donny |

I don't know about the rest of it, I could be wrong(not the first time ) But I think the 4 speed is a longer tranny equaling the need for a shorter drive shaft. Or a master welder

You will need to disconnect the 3 speed shift linkage at the bottom of the column and if you want it to look correct you will need a 4 speed steering column too. |

Thanks for the replies---I am aware of ther steering column and the need to make a 4 speed shifter hole. I assume the lever can be removed from the 3 speed column. Keep in mind I am new to 62 Impalas. Lots to learn!!!! Any value in the 3 speed?---Lee |

Lee: let me chime in. In your first post you were asking about using the original clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. Unless they were changed in the last few miles, I would be replacing all. No need to have to go back in to replace them later. I call it cheap insurance. |

joe going from 3 to 4 speed the drive shaft should be ready to go There are long and short tail shaft three speeds. I had a 6 cyl three speed in mine with the shorter tail shaft and the stock powerglide drive shaft worked (don't recall the length)when I changed it over in 1966.

"There are long and short tail shaft three speeds. I had a 6 cyl three speed in mine with the shorter tail shaft and the stock powerglide drive shaft worked (don't recall the length)when I changed it over in 1966." That makes sense to me. Back in the 70s I replaced a blown cast iron PG with a 3 speed stick on a 62 Impala 283 and used the same driveshaft with no modifications. Eric
