Would anyone know the diameter (or specs) of the coil for a 1964 Impala SS front spring? Not sure what springs are on the car but I would like to return it to the original ride height. It's sits too high now. Thanks |

The diameter of the springs are all the same. It is the wire dimension that changes, and the number of turn that determines the ride hight. I would do a check of the ride hight per the instructions in the FSM to determine if it is too high before doing anything. Today, getting the correct springs can be difficult, but there is one company that still makes springs using the original GM drawings. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

The diameter of the wire is what im looking for. Eaton Springs (Detroit Spring) is 2 miles from me, Its the first place I checked, I was told that there is no way to tell. on Eaton Springs Website it explains that spring application is determined by; length of spring, number of coils, diameter of wire. |

I can't say about 1964, but I know in 1963 the wire diameter of the springs were NOT the same among all the applications. This is shown in the 1963 Passenger Car Specifications publication. I emailed the Spring Guru at Eaton and listed all the detailed GM specs from that publication for my particular application. He responded and said that that wire diameter is no longer available. He gave a part number for the front and rear, but it appears to be just like all of the other springs in all the parts catalogs - it's a generic part number that covers many applications, both 6 cylinder and V8. After finding this out, I'm not so sure I can justify the doubled price of Eaton springs since it appears that the springs are not built to actual GM specs as they claim.

Welcome rob. Funny, while working on my body, i leveled the body to shop manual frame specifications, then, (2 dr HT Tarrytown) the rocker, is dead on horisontal, and side trim is lower at the rear. I really do like that stance. There is a riding height measure in the shop manual for the front, but not for the rear if i remember right. See if you can find it or ask again. I do like your stance anyway, she looks grat. To high refering to what? Svenne |
