I bolted a 5 spd up to mine with no crossmember, I figured if the cast iron 3 spd could hang there for 50 plus years, a lighter aluminum case 5 spd should present no problem, although a crossmember certainly could do more good than harm, especially with higher HP and a heavier foot.
