Does anyone know what causes oil to turn black? After changing my oil, it gets real black real fast. What could be causing this? I also have the oil filter on top of my engine, wondering if there's a way to get the old oil out of the canister other than using a Turkey Baster?

Hmmm - Based on your description, it sounds like you have a 6 Cyl with the oil filter hanging off the exhaust manifold. When I used to change oil in my 6 Cyl Bel Air, I seem to remember "sopping up" the excess in the filter canister with some paper towels. It wasn't an extreme PIA (pain)to do, but did require that extra step. If you're not doing something like this now, I can see why your oil could be blackened sooner by old oil contamination. Make sense?

I change the oil every 1000 miles due to it's color. Could bad rings cause this problem? Or maybe a bad fuel pump leaking gas into the crankcase? I clean every last drop of oil out of the canister each time. |

Some causes: *Carbon-black from incomplete combustion *Dirt being introduced through the induction system (aircleaner/dirty filter) *Failure to remove every drop of old contaminated oil at oil change intervals (basically impossible; some stays in oil pan) *Sludge buildup in motor It only takes a little bit of old, black oil being mixed into or introduced to the new, clean oil to cause a very dark appearance of the new oil.

Thanks for your Input. I'm thinking the old 1 barrel is running rich. I put a carb kit in her but the old Rochester is probably worn out. Good excuse to put the 348 out of the grain truck in her!

You could get an oil analysis done at a heavy truck or Cat dealer to see how good or bad your 1000 mile oil is the next time you change it. Don
