So I have all back together. The only project now is to hook up the t.v. cable. Should I get anything without the cable hooked up? I started the truck and there was no leaks. I checked the return hose and there was fluid in it, but when shifting gears I get nothing.Im assuming its because the tv cable is not hooked up yet, at least I hope.

5 quarts of fluid good?

No, not quite. It takes 11 quarts if you've the shallow pan.

Without the cable hooked up, it will have reverse and low.

With an empty transmission, I initially put in 7 or 8 quarts (any more than that and it'll come out the vent).

Start the truck and let it idle in park and keep adding until the level is up to the "full" line on the dipstick.

At that point, run it thru the gears.

Be darned sure to recheck after it is hot.

Fill it one quart at a time. Run it only a few seconds ~10 between quarts. You must have all 11 + cooler quarts in before moving it. Put it in neutral to get flow while filling it.

I just did a 700r4 swap last month. When you adjust the cable your shifting should feel like a newer truck. If it is too loose it will shift too fast and you will be in overdrive at 20mph. I set mine to shift at about 2800 rpm under normal acceleration and it feels great. I had my transmission builder come for a ride and he said that it was on the money. Set it to pull the cable fully at WOT and you should be close. Go test ride and see how it feels then try it 1-2 notches in another direction so you can see the difference. It would be good to know how it feels both too tight and too lose just incase your cable would get hung up.

1-2 shift = ~15 MPH
2-3 shift = ~25-28 MPH
3-OD shift = 45 MPH+ based on throttle

One thing I did not do was prime the converter. Was it nescessary?

On anything with a Vane front pump - No, but it is a good practice.

On anything with a gear pump - Yes, absolutely necessary.

A 700r4 has a vane pump.

Great info guys, thanx. I have it topped off and have gears now. I still have to go through everything and retighting all bolts.

I still have the issue of the tv cable. I have the 1406 edlebrock performer carb so I believe the arm on carb is correct. What part do I need to hook the square lock in?
