Hi:

I have a 67 Chev Impala 283 with power steering. The turning ratio is like working an egg beater. I plan on replacing or upgrading the box to a faster ratio with fewer turns lock to lock.

Will the current box accept the pieces from a 69-70 Caprice or will I have to get a new 69-70 box.

I plan on getting a rebuilt unit.

I am also wondering about the power steering pump if I have to do the conversion. Will I have to have a pump matching the 69-70 box.

I have read some of the performance shops that offer different pressure pumps.

Any leads on a rebuilt steering box and pump in Ontario Canada

I think your '67 housing should accept the latter model gears but I have not done this myself. If your pump was performing OK, there is no reason that it needs to be changed for a different P/S box. The pumps have an adjustable pressure relief valve, but too much pressure is not good as I could cause leakage in hoses and seals.

HI: Just found a person to rebuild my old steering box and pump. I had contacted an auto wrecker about a box and he referred me to Custom Steering Gear 187 Steelcase Road W, Markham Ontario 905-475-5533

I talked with Ken for a while and was impressed with his knowledge and experience. He will be rebuilding my box with a 12:1 ratio along with the rebuilt pump.

I decided to go with the pump because in the 33 years I have owned it the fluid has never been touched.

Thanks.. I had noticed some reference to the Jeep box doing my research but was doubtfull..

Picked up my rebuilt box on Thur and delivered it to my mechanic. Probably be done in a week or two. They are also doing the complete front end with the eurathane bushings.

The rear was done a few years ago.

Will keep you posted. Asked them to take a huge pile of photos during the replacement.
