Does anyone know where I can get an original style universal joint for my 54 Chevy? I need the one with a 1 1/16" diameter hole through the center. The hole allows the u-joint to be slid back on the drive shaft. It saves having to move the engine to get clearance. All the ones I find either have no hole or a hole that's too small. Thanks. |

Try Obsolete Chevrolet Parts. What kind of transmission?

Check with a seller on Fleabay that goes by the name of vintageboyone. He sells originals and may have what you need.

I don't have a 53 but cannot understand why you have to move the engine to install the U joint. with the rear wheel on the ground and the weight of the car on them, then the ujoint should have just enough room to clear the cross member when dropping or lifting the drive shaft.

Dear Fixit, Are you talking about the "Front Yoke?" (See links). This slides on the drive shaft to account for small changes in the distance between the tranny and the differential. You should be able to push this back far enough for clearance. Scott A. http://www.my54chevy.com/page46/page51/page51.html http://www.my54chevy.com/page46/page56/page56.html

I agree with what you say in the case of original parts. What I'm saying is, if you replace the u-joint with an aftermarket version that doesn't have a large hole through it, you can't slide it back far enough. It will run into the crossmember when you go to swing the drive shaft up into place. The only way I can see to get it together would be to get the transmission out of the way, raise the drive shaft way up and install the front yoke working above the crossmember. |

The u-joint will not clear the crossmember unless you can slide the front yoke assembly back. You can only slide it back if there is a large hole in the center of the u-joint, as in the original design. It appears that no one offeres a replacement u-joint with the necessary large hole. |

By the way, if you read the text in the service manual that refers to the exploded view given in your link, I think you'll conclude, as I did, that the call out for the two yokes is incorrect. The numbers 1 and 7 are reversed. The text has it right. The front yoke is bolted to the transmission output shaft and the rear yoke is the one that slides onto the splined end of the drive shaft. |

He doesn't need the entire assembly, you're going to cause Fixit to have a heart attack! All he needs is the trunion. Fixit, have you checked with that guy I mentioned on Fleabay yet? It wouldn't take much to enlarge the center hole on the one I bought from him to the dimensions you need.

Buying the entire assembly doesn't solve the problem if the trunion doesn't have the large hole. |

I'm guessing Fleabay means e-Bay. Sorry, but I don't know how to find what a person has for sale if you only have their name. I've searched using everything I can think of related to universal joint and gotten nowhere. I would like to avoid modifying a replacement trunion. They are already thinner and weaker than the original. |

Instead of searching fleabay, I just Googled "vintageboyone". vintageboyone Chris |
