if you are sure its the cap, I'd go ahead and replace it.

A little trick I have used is folding up a paper towel 'til its about 1" wide and about 1/2" thick, then wraping it around each line (supply, return, filler, fuel pump, etc) using a zip tie to hold it in place... romp around a little, some figure 8's, hard launch, and stops.... then checking out the towels

Words are a lot like toothpaste... Once its out of the tube,
there's no getting it back in...
