I know how to change differential fluid, but am looking for recomendations on synthetic gear oil and weight for my 06 5.3 also never done a transfer case fluid change, so tell me about it.. start to finish.. same for a tranny pan drop, never done it, better to let the shop keep it up or tackle it on my own ? how big of a hassle is it ? just never done it before. |

As far as your transfer case goes, I had my '05 done and the garage had to get a special fluid from Chevy dealer. I have the Auto 4 wheel drive. You need to double check on that one. |

Transfer case is very easy. Takes literally 10 minutes.
Let fluid drain Put drain plug back in Unscrew fill plug (also 18 mm I think?) Fill with new fluid until it starts coming out the fill hole. Should take just about 2 quarts. Put fill plug back in and tighten. I use a small hand held pump that screws onto the bottle to pump it in. That's all there is to it, very easy. As mentioned above, if you have the Auto 4 wheel drive then you have to use the special Autotrak fluid. As far as I know there's no aftermarket fluids available for this. You can pick this up at your GM dealer, I don't remember it being too expensive. (unlike the dealer differential fluids) Transmission pan is a different animal. You'll have to drop the pan (which can be messy) and can be difficult to remove with the shift linkage, then get it bolted back up with the gasket and correct torque on all the bolts. But it can be done, just sees like a hastle to the average person while laying on your back the whole time. I've always taken mine to the shop / dealer to have the transmisison serviced, but do my own differential & TC fluid changes since they are much easier.

Changing the transmission fluid can be more work then it worth, so I would let a Trans shop do that for you. Avoid the quick lubes, to many amateurs working in those places to be trusted to perfrom the service up to the standards necessary. Everything there is designed to make the quick $ at the expense of expert service. Transfer case on a 06 with push button shift does use a special fluid, GM Autotrack II but its often available in parts stores, trans shops. DO NOT USE ATF or anything other than Autotrac II or failure could result. Front and rear differentials require synthetic 75W-90 GL5 Gear Lube, 5 qts enough to do both. Transmission uses a Dexron VI fluid. Note-Owners manuals sometime say 80W-90 in front diff but 75W-90 is preferred and factory filled since '02, manuals never updated to reflect that. I recommend AMSOIL.
