Anyone have any tips on installing door panels from PUI? Do you put the nails in the door panel then push in or push in and work them into the panel? I had tried putting them in and am having problems pushing them in,I had to use a hammer. Is that normal or im thinking mine are old. Are those the original plasic inserts where the pins are to be inserted into? From the picture they look like they have a lot of paint on them and in the slots. The paint may be giving you the problems. If the paint is in the slots try cleaning a couple out and see if the nails won't go in easier Jim

That did the trick, once I cleaned them the nails when in. Now my next problem is trying to get the molding with felt on. Will I need trim the panels down? |

I must be doing something wrong, I cant figure out to get the top of the panels wrapped and on. Do you just fold into the windown channel and then push the felt/molding on top of? The felt/molding has holes to screw in but my door doesn't? I just put the new window felts on my 65 SS. I carefully made new holes and screwed them in. On my original panels, there were staples holding the felts on, so I was very careful when removing those. On a side note, where did you purchase those SS panels? I am in the market for some. Nick

You are missing the top metal piece that attaches to the door panel. |

Im having a heck of a time with the felts, the dont line up, am I doing something wrong? The previous owner had purchased them and if I remember the box said classic industries. The brand is PUI, and they make them with the felts installed. [image] Untitled by 65impalassconv, on Flickr[/image]

Are you talking about the molding with the curve? This one? Link I have been looking but the only ones I have found are on eBay and are $65 a piece, waiting for a better deal. |

What you need is curved but it is made of sheet metal and goes the lentgh at the top of teh door panel. It appears what you purchased is what is called an "unassembled" panel. |

Yes it is the un-assembled panel, i think I have the piece your talking about. Here is another pic of it, has the felt attached. Also the pic above shows it in place, but it doesn't bend down enough. [image] Untitled by 65impalassconv, on Flickr[/image]

That is your inside felt trim. It attaches to the top rail which you are missing. The top rail should be stapled onto the top of the fiberboard behind/under the vinyl. |

Watch this video. This shows the assemble of a 62-64 door panel but pay attention around the 1 minute mark and you will see the top rail being attached to the door panel. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOedQHKhZGA&a mp;fea... |

Those metal pieces are taken from the old door panels and moved to the new. That is, if you have the old door panels!

No unfortunately I don't have the originals. Last owner bought these un assembled also. I looked and didn't see any on eBay. I would think PUI would sell The top rail since they make the assembled panel but it doesn't look like it. I might try and sell these and buy new assembled ones. |

I don't think selling those is going to help you. As far as I know, nobody sells preassembled door panels for 65's. Just keep looking or find someone who has a parts car.

PUI sells preassemble door panels, that is where I bought mine. You will need to finish the edge after attach the clips. They come with the metal attached to the top that you are missing. |

Last night I received my new door panels for my 1966 Bel Air two door post from SMS in Oregon. They did amazing work - exactly like they were from the factory. Now I just need to figure out if I can install them without having to pay for an upholstery fitter. |

Very Nice! I hadn't even thought about SMS for the door panels and I live in the same town! Oh man i'm losing it. Could you post some pictures? Curious how they look compared to a PUI panel. |

I will post some pictures once I get them up but I want to keep them wrapped until we can install them hopefully next week. I can assure you they are perfect but you may want to call 503-263-3535 and ask for Doug and tell him you talked to Mike Wagoner with the Marina Blue 66 Bel Air 2 door post. It got hit by Ike and has gone through a 3 year restore and close to complete. He may be able to show you some work. SMS was recommended to me for door panels. I used Cars Inc for the seats, carpet, headliner and package tray. I had both companies send me samples to make sure they were correct and matched and they did even though one is in Michigan and the other in Oregon. I will get you pictures soon. I went a little over my budget and got my original seat belts done by Snake-oyl Products. They did amazing work - I can't say enough about their quality especially on the old hard plastic latch covers. |

Ssnake-oyl is the place that refurbished by seat belts. Rechromed the buckles, new emblems, exact quality belting, etc. I can't recommend them enough. They aren't cheap, but you get what you pay for.
