I recently purchased a late 70's to early 80's .060 over tall deck 427 reman engine w/very low miles. I want to build this for street strip, mostly street. I want to run a 6:71 blower w/carbs aluminum rectangle port heads, 6.535 steel H-beam rods and forged flat tops w/ a 1.645 C.H. Can anyone tell me if this combo is right? I want the longest rod possible without the pin getting in the lower ring. thanks for reading, Dad

Welcome to the site. The truck tall deck motors are strong at low RPMs. C30+ trucks used them for hauling cargo. Car and truck motors are different. The difference is deck height, intake, distributor, and the tall decks came with 4 ring pistons. Heads, crank, cam, rods, etc etc will interchange. The intake will not interchange.
If the height of the tall deck is no concern , add a 4.25 stroke crank, 6.385 rods, the "regular" 454 pistons of your choice, and cut about .050 off the deck. Simple, cheap and easy 496.

The motor gurus can provide better information.

personally IVE always preferred the tall deck blocks when building a 496 but IM in the minority, Ive used the scat 4340 forged crank rotating Assembly with 6.385" rods and 7/16" rod bolts
CHEVY: Rotating Assemblies
CHEVY BIG BLOCK 4340 FORGED ROTATING ASSEMBLIES
CHEVY 454 BIG-BLOCK 2-PC REAR SEAL 454 MAIN, 4340 FORGED CRANKS, H-BEAM RODS WITH 7/16" CAP SCREWS, obviously gearing and compression heads, intakes etc. change your cam choice so talk to CRANE AND CROWER AND ERSON about your cam choice once your sure of those components

Thanks for the info, I am aware of the tall deck differences. That's why I picked it, and it was very cheap $100, was complete except for carb , water pump and exhaust. I'd say it had maybe 2500 miles on it. It was using oil. I got one heck of a deal. Grumpy gave me alot of info I am reading through now. Thanks again Dad

Thanks for the info Grumpy. It made for some really good reading and lots of good info as well. I have built several small blocks throughout the years but only a few big ones, and what you have posted tought me alot about them I was unaware of, most of all oiling. With your info, I have decided to go with a 496 rotating assembly. For the money , it is the best value and I know going in that all will work out for the best. Still thinking of the blower though. The Cam, I will have to talk to one of the cam makers in order to get the right combo there. I have talked to others and by far you gave me the better info. Thanks again, Dad

One other thing, Whats up with milling the deck .050? I know the pistons on a big block dont go to the top, but why do this? I will be using a blower,, Dad

You can take off 0.005 without affecting cam timing. If you need the extra clearance for compression, just leave it alone.

What's the now 496 going into??? Just curious!! Someday, I'll drive something that has a BB bigger than a 454.

I'm building a '36 chevy low cab pu, mustang after market IFS, 9" ford w/4link, 4 wheel disc brake, I set the engine back 5". I have a frame jig that I have built a few frames on, this one is on there now, the frame is almost finished. I used 2 x 3 x 3/16" wall rectangle tubing then a Chris Alston 10 point cage. It will be a true chevy "RAT ROD" lol,,,, if I could figure out how to put up some pics I would. Dad
