I almost made the same mistake once on a 57 Chevy Handyman wagon and bought it sight unseen. It had a new 383 motor, 350 trans new paint for $12,000. I thought how much could I lose. Fortunately I drove from Louisville , KY to Hometown, WVa. before buying it. If the car was outside I'd of kept on going. It had new paint all right all over dents and rust. Believe me when I tell you this car was the biggest POS I've ever seen. Not only will i never buy a car sight unseen but a will never drive a long distance to see a POS either.

POS=Piece of S

Ken,

I am in the middle of the same thing. Buying a 71 Eldorado convertible. california car. I am flying to KC MO to look at it myself. $500 so I dont need to trust anyone else.

We also know how big of a project I am into with my 65. I only did the powertrain first and now the body.

I needed to raise the Engine about 5/8" to get the Pan off the Crossmember.....Rather than mess around with Frame mounts and Motor mounts, I decided to make new motor mount adaptor plates......because the mounts are on an angle and I wanted to raise the engine, I had to figure out how much to move the rubber mount holes and how much thicker to make the plate to get everything to fall into place.....here are some pic's

Store bought plate in black......you can see how the 3 rubber mount holes are moved down and the plate is also thicker

New plate mounted to the engine......

Rubber mount installed......

Engine down on the mounts and the holes line up perfectly....Just slid the bolts in....I love it when a plan comes together....

Pan not sits nicely above the crossmember.....

And sits perfectrly with the bottom of the crossmember

Also got my raised alternator mounting kit....

Got entergetic this morning and created a major mess in the garage.....took the front end apart....Grille, bumper, lights, etc.......also took off the rear bumper assy.....the car is going for Media blasting on Tuesday....when it gets finished there (gonna be interesting to see what's under the 1/8" of paint) I'll bring it back home and gut the Interior and then off to the Puleras where they will work their magic on the Body.......The Bumpers will also go out for re-chroming

LOL.............

But....as Shoddy the body and paint on the car is....the "Important" stuff is in pretty good shape....Trunk floor is perfect......and there is just minor surface rust behind the rear bumper.....should clean up pretty easy......could be a lot worse

Time to start ordering parts ............

The car is going for Media blasting tomorrow.....So....I wanted to break the car down a little more......Found the trunk full of Nu Yawk mouse crap....

tail light assy's are pitted with lousy chrome....I'll try and find some NOS ones......if not I'll just get these rechromed$$$$$$

The paint is probably 1/16" thick in spots....

Anyone need any Nu Yawk Day 2 Speakers....LOL

Except for the speaker holes and the dents on the outside of the doors......the doors are rust free.....a welcome surprise..

Took the rear seat out and the there was just light surface rust on the seat pan.....

Ready for the trailer.....

Look what I found.........Hadn't been started for two years.....110 octane and a Diehard and she started right up....amazing...

we will see what's under all that paint in a couple of days

Picked the car up this afternoon......I'll post some better pic's tomorrow...but...In a nutshell........It's better than I thought......Remember, I have new fenders so I didn't have the old ones blasted, but....the Doors,Hood, Trunk Lid, Rockers are all in great shape........the wheel openings in both quarters had rust and had been patched..........Gonna have to get some patch panels and repair them correctly.......Not as bad as I expected, but......I'm glad we decided to blast the body to really see what was under that "Survivor" Nu Yawk Paint.....LOL

Drivers Side

Passenger side....

Rear......

Got the car out of the trailer today to clean it up and strip the inside so when I get the call to take it to Pulera's for Body/Paint.....it will be ready......Again....there is good and bad after stripping.....but....I think there is more good than bad.....
Here are the bad pic's.....

And some good pic's......the doors are rust free except for a minor area that will require a little a little patch...

Doors and rockers are in great shape.....

Drivers side is perfecto.......

Floors......Minor surface rust only....

Found this "Classic" Nu Yawk spare tire cover.........

And I decided to store it in the Garbage can.....A fitting end..

And.....as I was working on the car today I could almost hear it telling me "Thank You" for getting me out of Nu Yawk....LOL

Did some more dis assembly today.....took the rest of the front sheetmetal off and things ended up being better than expected.....all the Body mounts are in great shape.....the only issue is the lower fender mount on the passenger side will need to be replaced.......the mounting surface was rusted away and the body shop (LOL) that repaired the fenders just tack welded the lower portion of the fender to the body......Nu Yawk's finest.......the original cowl paint behind the fender cleaned up very nicely.......Here's some pic's from today...

At least you'll be able to get to the front body mounts!

I bought a set of mounts from SoffSeal. Cheap imported stuff - they ended up looking like those on your car after just three years. Ended up with PU units from Energy. Problem fixed.

Stopped at the Body Shop today (Puleras in Kenosha, Wi)and talked to Randy about getting the car in......Randy told me to bring all the bolt on parts in, Hood, Fenders,Doors,Deck Lid, etc.......So.....The part of doing a project that I hate more than anything........Taking the window mechanisms out of the car........What a Pain in the A$$!!!.........Only have the patience to do one a day........

Parts from inside one door.....

Gonna order the quarter patch panels and in a week or two the body should be at Puleras.........

Dropped off the loose sheetmetal at Puleras last week....It looks like it will be a couple of weeks before they will be ready for the body as they are slammed with repair jobs....so I continued with the dis-assembly.....took all the windshield trim off and everything is in great shape in the windshield area...so..as long as I have to wait a couple of weeks, I'm gonna put the engine back in and get the exhaust system made and I'm going to hook up the 4L65E trans to the stock column shift linkage.......so, I can make up a shift arm for the trans....Compared to the 37 Ford build....this is simple.....things just go together...(so far).....here are some pic's from today....

Anyone want a "Genuine" Nu Yawk Dice/Scotch Tape rear view Mirror.......Special Long Island Option.....

Frame assy in great shape......

I also took the fenders (old and new) down to the shop today...... the NOS fender and the new old fender needed some trim holes put in.......Trying to figure out how to position them correctly from the Factory Assembly manual is quite the project.......I'm sure it makes sense to someone....LOL....Heres the page from the manual with the Dim's.....

So............How to do this and get all the seperate letters to be in the right place.......I took the old fender and measured where the first and last holes were relative to the crease and door side opening......

And.....Since I was going to trash the fenders anyway.....I got the Plasma Cutter out.....and got down to bare metal.......The layers of paint were just like reading tree rings

Cut the pattern out of the old fender.....

Measured and drilled one of the holes in the new fender.....It just so happened that the holes size allowed me to screw in a 8-32 screw.....tighten up the one screw.....positioned the other hole, drilled it thru and added the second screw......now I had a drill jig for drilling the other holes in position and to the correct size

Look how thick the "ORIGINAL Survivor" paint is on the old fender.....LOL

I ordered a new set of Body mounts and want to change them before the car go's to Pulera's......Started loosening the old bolts but needed to soak them in some penetrating oil....so in the mean time I pulled the fuel tank down.....bottom of the trunk floor looked pretty good....

Then I continued with the paint stripper around the trunk are......Boring!!

Checked the frame out pretty closely......99.9% of the frame was dead solid....but...I found a pencil sized hole in the outer frame rail in front of the drivers side rear wheel......started pecking on it and it started to grow.....LOL.....I ended up putting in a couple of small patches after getting to solid metal....I was going to bring the wire welder home from the shop ( my cars are now "Banned" from coming into the shop)but it didn't work out....and.....The Princess left her purse out and I bought a new 115 volt welder for the garage....Wow!! what a machine......Technoligy has come a long way....Zapped the patches in place....Good as new.....sprayed some undercoating and except for the color it's good as new....

Also.....My mint survivor Grille had been smashed and straightened in it's past to where the bars would need some welding and straightening......It's the top grille in the pic's and it doesn't look bad in the pic, but, it's not of the quality I would put on the car after finishing.....So....I bought one off eBay that is perfect (lower grille in pic), but it still needs to be stripped,Bright Dipped and reanodized......$$$$ Love those Mint Nu Yawk cars...

Also....I moved all the parts into the basement so I can sort thru and clean, paint, and detail for reassembly.......She's gonna be "pissed" when she go's down there....LOL...

The fenders are now at the body shop and being worked on and the trunk lid is going tomorrow.....Getting close for whats left of the body to go there for repairs and finishing

I am currently wasting a week of my project waiting for hinge pins since Hubbards obviously does not know enough about them. Cant believe something so simple can be engineered so poorly in the replacement market. I know why I got out of the engineering game before I entered it. I was 16 credits short and got a business degree, now I know why. sorry for the rant. I do have some fabrication work to do for the fender mounts, so I should quit whining and start making mockup mounts.

any chance of photos of the lower fender mount you made? I am in the middle of making one. Mine aint pretty, but looks like it will work. I need to get up in my loft and get my fender down to make sure before I epoxy, panel bond or weld it in. What did you use for the nut in the mount? I know it needs to be caged in or similar.

Also, did they remake the lower windshield piece and weld it in or use panel bonding adhesive?

Stock Driver side lower fender mount.....The hole is 1/2" in dia and it is 3 3/8" foward of the end of the rocker panel, 1/2" in from the frame side of the body lip and the fender mount surface is 2 1/4" down from the top edge of the factory mount where it is spot welded to the cowl area...

I cobbled together the Passenger side from 1/16" thick sheetmetal I found in the garage

Ain't pretty......but it works....Hope this helps

I'm waiting to get the car into the Body Shop right now.....kinda in that limbo mode where not much is happening.....But....The car was undercoated since new but the drivers foot pan had some rust from the inside, it didn't go thru but it thinned out the metal.......so, I did the Rust removal thing from the inside but I didn't want to leave it the way it was......so.....I pieced out a replacement floor pan section and welded it in over the existing floor.....I painted and prepped between the two pieces and tacked it in......then I sprayed a can of Boeshield around and in between the seams......then I put seam sealer along the seam and painted the patch.......I didn't want to cut out the panel as it wasn't really that bad....just thin, and since the floor pan had the undercoating from new......I didn't want to deal with that mess
of making it match........Remember.......this is a "Driver"...and it will be lowered....so when I'm finished it's gonna get Dirty underneath......"And".....Stay that way......LOL

The windshield frame is like the day the car was built.....absolutely no rust....

Got the car out of the garage and into the trailer ready to go to the body shop.......Just waiting for the phone call

Gonna order Ridetech Coil Over suspension (tubular control arms etc.) that should lower the car a couple of inches and 4 wheels disc brakes......

Some of the purchased parts are starting to show up.......After doing the LS Swap in the 37 Ford, I was very happy with the way the Fuel system worked out....I used the GTO fuel pump/sender assy..........the GTO set-up does not required a Pressure regulated return line as it is a self-contained unit.......So.....
The new fuel tank showed up today and I brought a Fuel pump down tp figure it out..........

New Tank

Tank and GTO Pump assy.........LOL

Hummmm!!!!! Now I just need the Pump assy to fit....I don't need the float arm function as I will be using the stock Impala Fuel Gauge sender.....So.....We need to get it as compact as possible......

I am just going use the original top of the pump to seal to the yet to be fabricated flange that will be welded into the tank and for the internal pump harness plug to connect to the external harness....All the existing GTO gas tank venting will be removed and sealed off .......It seems that everything will fit with a small sump area added to the bottom of the tank.......Ahh!!!.......The Fun starts

Before and after.........

I didnt want to create a rust problem ten years down the road so I went with a tank from a 90 impala. It is plastic, but I did have to put a different pump in it since the LT1 and LS1 both work on different fuel pressures and volumes.

Keep up the good work. Waiting on a lower spring and trying to get to Dallas or Pheonix for rust free front outer fenders.

Here's a better picture......Corrections for correct alignment are built into the control arms......If you look at the pic's closer you will see the old strut rod is built into the lower control arm and controlled with a Ball swivel rather than the rubber bushing
By the way it's all Ridetech .......

I found space for my TBI ECM just below the glovebox, so i mounted it on an aluminum plate that hangs on a couple of brackets.

I don't know how they stand working in such a filthy body shop - the conditions are utterly deplorable.

Sure seems like they've jumped on this project, and that it won't turn into one of the often heard about 2 year nightmares - AKA bodyshop hell. I wish I had half the talent as George appears to have - ya've just got to appreciate a true craftsman - no matter what the craft is.

Looking great!

Back from SEMA..........While we were gone, some of the "Stuff" I bought arrived.....LOL......Just in case you missed the beginning of this thread.....My "Mint" Survivor car needed a little attention in the Radio area....LOL....(You would think a "Mint" Survivor car would have a Radio........LOL.....Those crazy Nu Yawk Jokesters)

So.....The one I bought off eBay arrived and I'm sending it out to Vintage Auto Radio for am-fm/sirius solid state conversion

I also got my Fuel Pump assy mounting flange that was cut out of a GTO tank so I can continue with the fuel system/Tank modifications ( got it from Cleveland-Pick-Apart.....great people to deal with)

And.....I stopped at Pulera's to see the progress that George had made on the car.......He's gonna be on vacation for a couple of days this week so nothing's gonna happen till later in the week....But, he got the quarters pretty much finished last week........here's some pic's....

I also received a set of repro wheel opening mouldings that had one of the pieces damaged, called the vendor ......and here we go again.......Nuff Said!!

Because this was a small block car, it had a 10 bolt in it with standard gear ratio and a open rear ...........so, if I decided to change the ratio and add a posi unit, I would still have a 10 bolt (which would probably be fine) but I ended up finding a 12 bolt rear end that was missing the differential and the ring and pinion......I bought a 3:55 Ring and pinion, a new posi unit and we are good to go now without the worry of breaking anything with the LS power........the 12 bolt also has 2 upper stut rods where the 10 bolt only has one......gotta order another one from Ridetech.......the rear Disc brake set-up is the same for the 10 or 12 bolt.........Moving along....

Got a couple more boxes today........Rear Sway bar and because I switched to a 12 bolt, I needed to order another upper control arm (10 bolt has 1 ....12 bolt has 2)so....the suspension is now complete......Can't wait to get to the point to where I get to put all this stuff on the car.....

I also stopped at Pulera's today as it was Georges first day back this week........he has the passenger side quarter ready for priming........

And.....at the shop the next task at hand.......Getting the GTO pump assy to fit in the 66 Tank......More Pic's to come...

Right now it's a big mess, but......there is a plan.......

Leon......I agree.....the 10 bolts are stronger than most people give them credit for.....I've got a 66 Nova with a 10 bolt that runs in the 10's on drag Radials....never any problems......this housing came up and it seemed like a good idea so I went that route........Also there is possibly a Magnacharger in the near future......So!!!...........LOL

Stopped at Puleras today after being gone for a week.....Here's what I found when I got there....They were just ready to get the car out of the spray booth.....Perfect Timing!!.....After getting the car out and removing the masking paper.....I spent some time looking at everything and determined that even though the top was new.......I can't leave it alone as the top frame assy is weathered to where I would not be happy with the end result......So.....when I get the body home this weekend......apart it comes....the Top frame will be sent to Strip-Rite for paint removal so it can be finished off to match the quality of the rest of the car.......This never ends.....LOL
The rest of the parts will be painted later in the week.....The gas Tank/Fuel assy will also be finished later this week......we have been so busy at the shop that my stuff always gets pushed to the back of the priority list....Soon Come.....

Well, It seems that the lull in the action is coming to an end.......the car (Body and Doors) will be picked up tomorrow....also I picked up the rebuilt 12 bolt rear end today...and, I just about have the fuel tank/fuel pump assy finished.......I really liked the simplicity of the 2004-06 GTO fuel pump as it does not require a pressure controlled fuel return line to the tank......But as you can see the GTO pump is a little tall to fit into the 66 tank...

So.....we need to make it fit.......I had a spare laying around that I cut up to play with.....I won't be using the stock GTO vent assy on the top of the unit......it will be capped off so I was able to cut out all the venting controls which took up a couple of inches....shortened the rods and springs and made it manageable......but I still had to put a lower sump in the tank as the stock tank is only 6 1/2" high.....

Thru wall fuel line adaptor yet to be welded in.....

I'm gonna have to install the tank about an inch below the trunk floor to clear the electrical plug assy, but....that's O.K. as there is a lot of room down there on my "Poifeckt" Survivor car.........LOL

Also....the newly rebuilt 12 bolt that will be detailed and installed shortly....

Got sick of tripping over the new 12 bolt.......Might as well move it out of the way.....

Pulled the Nova out and dragged the rear end to the backside of the lift......Lower the lift and lifted it on to the lift enough so it wouldn't fall off.....raised the lift and got out the transmission jack to take the weight so I could get it in position....

Got a flow going.....got out all the new Ridetech suspension and here we go!!

6 hours later........

Excellent work, Ken!

Did you find your VIN number on the frame directly over the jack stand in the second picture?

you figure out what to do for a master cylinder/booster/proporti oning valve?

I need to call cpp in the morning. You try to fit your booster in there yet? I prefer to measure before ordering.

They're on the top of the frame rail - you might need a little inspection mirror. Hopefully, they don't have undercoating over them!

Ken,

Since the upper shock mounts for the coil over shocks will be supporting the weight of the front of the car do they need to be reinforced at all?

I'm digging the spherical joints for the strut rods.

First off..........I wanted to add the second upper control arm on the rear axle assy....So.....I bought the second arm from Ridetech.......I thought there would have been a frame bracket included with the second Bar........So...I had the arm but nothing to mount it to......I copied the original and made my own....

Got it and the second arm installed tonight.....another thing crossed off the list....

I also had to put some additional clearance in for the Coilover shocks.........Buzzed it right out....

Got 1 side roughed in.......

Arn't stock boosters 11"?

Ken, what are the details on that steering box? I just ordered and received a quick(er) ratio box for my '66 that I hope to be installing soon but the one in your pic looks pretty small compared to a stock unit.

Got the front suspension almost finished today.....Seems the people at CPP didn't notice the stickers on the Wilwood Calipers that said the brake line inlet were tapped 7/16-20 for a Banjo type fitting.....they sent tapered pipe fittings.......also.....I finally found something that is way beyond my skill level and capabilities.......Trying to get those Chinese front spindle dust caps to go on....I destroyed them trying to get them in..........Gonna dig thru the parts and find the old ones........not the first time i've had those issues.....LOL........Here are some pic's

Great stuff K.

I saw the link to the new suspension components for the front. Couple of questions?

What brake kit did you go with on the front?

Did you get new spindles?

If you could post a parts list and prices Im sure I am not the only one that would be very much appreciative.

Micah.......My goal was originally just to lower the car with springs and or spindles......after doing some research. I became concerned about some handling issues that others had problems with........you would think that dropped spindles would be the easiest way to go...But....It seems there were some issues with going that route......So.......I talked to one of my friends that's really into the Autocross stuff and works at GM in the High Performance area.....I asked him if he was doing a Big car what would he do......(he's mostly into Camaro's)......he recommended the Ridetech Coil-over set-up.........
So.....at one of the Goodguy's shows I spent some time with the Ridetech guy's learning about suspensions.......Their set-up lower's the car a couple of inches and use's stock spindles......How can that be???.......Well, they build the lowering feature and corrective suspension geometry features into the upper and lower front "A" arms.......and you can play a little more by adjusting the coil-overs.....
The 65-66 suspension had some inherent design flaws that was corrected by GM in the 67 model year, this set-up was designed to correct those issues.... www.ridetech.com

The Brakes ........I bought the complete 4 wheel disc set-up from CPP with upgraded vented Rotors and Front Calipers......this set-up uses 80-85 Cadillac Seville rear calipers with built in E-Brakes........not the best in the world, but they work O.K.......Although (I've got them on 2 other cars)the E-brakes never seem to work very well........their kit is pretty complete and work very well for daily driving.....I also bought their 500 series "Quick" steering box....Last night I found out that the splined shaft coming out for the Rag Joint is a different size than the stock box.....now I'm gonna get an education on trying to find a new rag joint that works....

When I get it finished I'll be able to give a better opinion as to the handling of the car....

As I remember the complete suspension with front and rear sway bars was about $3600 List price and the Brake set-up was around $1400.....

I ordered Coys C5 with the Flat Black centers....17x7 front 4 1/4 B.S. with 225-55 tires.....Rear 18x8 4 1/2 B.S. 255-55tires.....I could have gone wider with the rear rims....but then you have to get into the real low profile tires.....I personally like a little more sidewall

couple questions for you...

you tying the vacuum into the dash gauge? I did and it works. funny, my first gauge is a success.

I plan on hooking the oil pressure line up too. Since they are both mechanical, cant really go wrong.

What are your plans on an exhaust? What are you using for headers? I went with the street and performance ones. Since I made my cross member from channel, I will need just straight pipes to the rear end then loop over.

I am thinking about going to a local guy for the exhaust. Problem is it will be another couple hundred to the job since I will need a tow there. Then from there to the front end shop, another couple hundred, then to the interior shop, then to inspection. The towing adds up. I may try to get it on my car trailer. It bottomed out bad when it was just the frame. I may try and cheat the front end of the trailer up (put the truck on blocks) to see if it will not scrape.

Spent some time Waxing that Nu Yawk beauty today!.......I needed to get the exposed area dash painted that won't be covered by the dash pad.........

That about takes care of all the messy stuff that needs to be done.......not we can get serious about assembly.....

The front rims never showed up while I was gone so I called there today and they wanted to ship all 4 rims together when the rears that are back ordered came in.....I had an old set of rims that I threw on the rear and figured the fronts would be in and mounted when I got back so I could move the car around to get the engine in........they shipped them out today.......Darn!!...Gotta go to plan "B"

Fuel system finished.....

Still waiting for the wheels and tires to come in so I can move the car around and get the engine in.....So....In the mean time I started putting the dash together......Here we go.....I ordered a bunch of repro stuff......Lets see how this goes.....
First off I opened the new dash trip bezels.......Holes lined up....Off to a good start.......install the headlight switch.....good so far........Install the wiper switch.....go to put on the new wiper switch knob.......Humm!!......When I tighten the set screw, the knob shifts to one side and the washer stem is locked in place.........HUmm!!....Put the old one back on and everything works fine........Put the new one back on and it binds up again.......Get a Caliper out and start measuring things.....theres a hex shape that keys on to the hex on the switch that turns for operation of the wipers.....Check the GM and then check the repro.......The Repro hex doesn't go thru the part deep enough to allow the knob to go on far enough for the set screw to tighten on the hex....it instead tightens on the washer push spindle and locks it in position......Great Start!!.......So, I put the old one back on and it works perfectly.......I can see right now there will probably be a bunch of stuff going back for credit (Wiper knob $12 Ignition Bezel $20)......this time I was smart and saved all the paperwork so I had a record of everything....

I bought a complete Interior Trim Kit so all this stuff was included.........Move on to the next piece.......install the trim plate....holes line up.....so far so good....install the cigarette lighter.....screws right in....install the ignition switch.....so far so good.....grab the new ignition trim bezel....oops!!.........Doesn't fit....Imagine that.....wrong part.....

Installed the old one.....another part to be returned......the last piece of trim to be installed ahd the studs bent during assy and wouldn't fit into the holes in the dash......So...should I bend them straight to fit and take a chance of deforming the front side that you see (my fault) or send it back??......Darn!!....I'm just getting started and already I hate all this Repro "Junk".....I don't want to be a chronic complainer here....I just want this to be a real world assembly experience and will call things as they happen just to save others from a like experience.....Anyhow!1....I straightened the studs and got lucky as the front didn't distort.....

Got all the A/C stuff out.....I'll get everything mounted tonight......

Ken, Just so I understand the problem was with the Wiper Knob not the switch correct? Reason being I have a repo switch I got in my garage right now from American Autowire and I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to have a problem putting the factory knob on that switch. Keep up the great work.

Thanks

Yep!!......The Repro knob wasn't reproduced correctly and the knob doesn't go over the switch far enough for the set screw to lock on the hex portion of the switch...so the set screw tightens on the push spindle for the operation of the washer.......

I actually found some parts that fit.....I put in the quarter window jamb seals and the rear window seals....they actually fit......

But.....I ran into some other issues that should have taken 5 minutes and ended up taking a day to fix.....just for what it's worth....the GM speed nuts (the sheet metal ones) that hold the rear quarter extensions on, are made with two slits that form the self cutting thread into the stud and tightens the unit to the quarter......I bought some repro ones that had only one slit....no big deal.....So...I had a heck of a time getting these things to screew all the way down the stud......they would just spin in place and after pushing on them I finally got them tightened up..........then I realized that I got ahead of myself and installed the quarter extensions without the trim piece installed.......Darn!!.....Took a couple of hours inside the trunk to get them off again,.....(The two GM nuts I had came right off).......after getting them off I took a threading die and cut a 1/4-20 thread on the studs and just used regular nuts....Simple thing ....8 Nuts......should have been ten minutes total time and ended up taking two days and a lot of frustration...........Be careful with those stupid little nuts...
Now.....I get out the repro trim kit that I bought from an company that specilaizes in Impala stuff....Get out the Quarter extension trim and open a bag the had "Quarter trim fasteners" on it.......I take the little trim clips and slide them into the trim and install them on the extension........Humm....on the inside of the extension, there wasn't any room for the nut as it was right next to the lip on the QE........Darn!!........I find some smaller nuts and just get them to fit....I couldn't get a socket on the nut cause there wasn't any room....so I spend an hour with a open end wrench snugging them up.....Double darn!!!......I keep thinking to myself.......I know GM was smarter than this as this was the Stupidest thing I have ever seen.......As I start installing the QE again....at least I can now put them on iun a minute with the studs threaded.....as I install the first one.....the trim pops off at the bend and the trim clip is now out of the trim.....I put a little pressure on the other one and it pops off also......WTF!!......I take everything apart again.........I just happen to look thru the other bag for the side trim and I see some plastic push clips made for a round hole.....I install them and push the trim on....Bingo!!.......I knew GM wouldn't do something so stupid ....so...stupid me ......but.....If the repro place would have included the right clips and some instructions it would have made things a lot easier.....Anyhow....the trim is on...

Got the trunk seal installed and also received the new harnesses from Lecric-Limited and changed out the rear lamp harness...I also found out the back ordered rims are in and I should have all the wheels and tires installed next week...

My original Perfect Nu Yawk Survivor Car harness in the garbage....

Hey Ken,

In the first picture in your post above it appears that the steel panel that the rear seat back hangs on to has some sort of board over it. Are my eyes playing tricks on me?

Interesting. I wonder if it is original.

My '66 vert doesn't have that, and I can't find any reference to it anywhere, not even in the Fisher Body Manual.

It looks like someone was messing around with the top pump as there are a couple of bolts missing from the mounts.....It was probably added at that time.......and the material looks to be relatively new...........

Thanks for that Ken, much appreciated.

Wouldn't mind seeing a closer photo of it though, if you have the time. If it was factory - or even a reproduction, it would have been stamped out in one piece or cut out using a form/guide. Just curious if your's looks home made.

I put the old one back on......Repro parts suck and the people that sell this junk that are supposed to be experts on certain cars are nothing more than dis-honest business people.....If they know (as they should) that this stuff isn't right, they shouldn't be selling it.....that's why I have no problem in being a "Pain in the censored" to these guys and returning this stuff.......Very Frustrating.....After all ,...If your business is selling this stuff......Know what you are selling.....The consumer shouldn't be the one to sort out this crap!!......Rant over!!

That really looks like a pretty good idea. I might do that.

BTW, I think I found the right bezel at lategreatchevy.com.

$32 dollars for a bezel seems pretty steep. Mine's too severely pitted to clean up, but everything else is too clean to not replace it correctly....

Well......Looks like I'm gonna get an education $$$$$$$ in Power Top repairs....The Nu Yawk guy I bought the car from told me (LOL) that the hydraulic power top system in the car was brand new as it was just replaced......So.....I wasn't concerned about that part....So..the top wouldn't operate and by looking at the plastic lines that go to the cylinders I could see there was air in the lines so I figured it was probably just low on fluid........LOL....
So.....I get out my Fisher Body manual and check out how to add fluid and bleed the system...I go out to the car and start to check it out and I find a different type of top motor than the book shows.....Hummm!.....So....I start to remove (what I thought was the fill plug) and find out that it's the bolt that holds the reservoir on the pump body....as it loosened up and the reservor came loose, no fluid came out....I took it off to look inside and found a 1/2" of muck inside it......Darn!!.....I can see where this is going $$$$$$.......Putting a Wax job on this "Perfect" Nu Yawk Survivor car is starting to get $$$........Those Krazee Nu Yawk guyz will do anything for a laugh....

I also have a 71 Eldorado with the dreaded scissor top.

I had nothing happening with the top when the switch was pushed. I send the complete motor and relays to a company called convertible service in San Gabriel Ca. They tested everything and even walked me through where the bad connection could be. They charged me zippo.

May be worth a try for you to call them.

I have my original pump, have no idea if it works or not. Everything else was hacked enough to where I just decided to start anew, with my 66.

I'd like to post pics of the entire install, but you should know at the outset that the pump is not "period perfect correct. It is supposed to work, it's new, I have all new tubing, switch, etc, so it had better damned well work. I am within weeks of getting here, but there is still some stuff we have to get buttoned down first.

I don't know if I can help, but I think we can make this work.

Best, Steve

The front rims finally arrived and I got the tires installed, the rears should be in next week......

I also stopped at the Upholstry shop and the Seats will be ready to be picked up next week......Got the Dyna mat installed inside the car also........Got all the polished stainless trim out and ready for installation.......

So......my mistake was assuming that the way the lines were installed previously was correct....as I was looking at the way the hydraulic lines were run, I could see that when the seats and rear interior panels were installed there was going to be some rub and pinch points with the lines.......I was so happy to get the system working that I didn't pay attention to that fact.....well , now that I had the time to look I could see this wasn't going to work out too well.......I got out my assembly manual and my Fisher Body service manual and looked for info on the routing of these lines........couldn't find anything to describe the correct asssy routing for the lines......In the Fisher body manual I found a couple of pictures showing the lines coming thru where the cylinders are but coming in from the trunk area...this makes sense as the lines will now have room to move withthe cylinders as they go thru their travel......anyone know where there are specific's for convert info for the routing of these lines and info for pinch trim assy with the clips???

So.....After looking at those surface rusted manifolds....I decided to give them the Mike Angelo/Grady Burch treatment..... Took them down to the shop and after removing the heat shields.....I glass beaded the castings....

Then you hit them with Krud Kutter which has Phosphoric Acid in it and blow dry with compressed air...

Then spray them with Slip Plate......

Let them dry and they are just like Nu.............Yawk!!

I did this process on the Biscayne 4 years ago and they still look like new

Ken,

Any chance of a photo of the bolt up of the pistons and the corners of the top? My 8-9 year old memory of taking it apart is a little fuzzy. I would just try to bolt it up, but my memory of pinching fingers from replacing my top on my 72 impala is a lot stronger.

How was your top header? I cant believe for a rusty frame, my header just needs the tack strip replaced and no repairs. Seems odd to me.

Core support bolted in so I can get the radiator and A/C stuff mocked up....

Got the pinch trim installed around the top opening......

Starting to look good with all that Nu Yawk Survivor car Stainless that was straightened and repolished....

Spent the day yesterday removing all that New Nu Yawk weatherstripping from the convertible top...

What's the first thing you check after shaking hands with a Nu Yawk Guy???

I have done tire work my whole life. Their proprietary valve setup is laughable, especially when they do not have illustrations of how the valve is assembled. Most foreign trucks use a similar setup, without the large black washer on the inside of the rim. I, with my valve knowledge, assembled the valve (like any mitsubishi, alcoa, or kino) rim. When I called I was talked to like a little kid and told I didnt know what I was doing and that the guy who answered the phone personally puts on 100,000 of these a year. When I asked him how he finds time to answer the phone if he does all this work, he told me he is the largest retailer on the west coast. I then laughed and told him Wal-mart does more in Utah than he does all west coast. Now I need to order replacement valves for the rubber grommets only. Funny how the rest of the world used valves that had rubber up the middle outside of the valve stem, and Coys does it better.

I would probably only be 3/4 as mad if my fathers 8500 new tire machine would be the proper machine to mount 18" mag wheel, since it couldnt. My father told me, just clamp the rim from the inside. To which I told him, that is why you drive a Kia.

I also figured out where to mount the ECM and the trans module.....I'll make a common mounting plate to mount them on and it will get bolted to the inner fender panel (not too many options as I have to go where the harness will let me)Wires everywhere..........Dave will have to blend everything together

I did my part......Got the headlights and Horn relay wired......Time for a Nap!!

The Windshield will be installed later this week and another one of those PITA deals to deal with are the windshield clips......the screws sent in the Repro kit with the clips didn't have a chance in hell of working......Again.....these guys sell this crap and we get stuck trying to make it work.....Lucky for me, I have a complete machine shop to play with, but the average guy in his garage would be screwed trying to fix this little problem......Anyhow, here's a before and after of the screws......

Screwed in.............

Clip installed..........

I also got all the A/C lines finished and installed along with the heater hoses........I ordered some of those heat shrink clamps this time.........we will see how good they work.....

I also got the ECM and the TCM mounted on the inner fender panel.....

The list of things to do is still long......but, it's getting shorter...

you have to weld and redrill any of the windshield screws? I had to do all of mine. When I finally found the bag with the clips in them, there were much larger screws, probably an 8 not the 4 they should have been.

I am too waiting on parts. the header tack material then I get a top.

Did some rear well work. nothing like patching being the only option. my try to get two tires finished today. Coys suck.

That's odd.

I also have Coys and when ordered, they were in within a week. Maybe since I've ordered, many people are ordering and they possibly can't keep up. I think I ordered about 3 years back.

Mine did have the made in china sticker too.

I ordered some replacement valves (since they didnt include a photo) because between me some other tire people agreed there were extra parts (a washer). The washer it seems was needed and I lost two. Long story short after a ten minute discussion on why they include a photo of how to properly tighten a wheel in the star pattern and why they do not include a photo of their proprietary valve assembly; I am still waiting. I did find a match for the washer, so figured I have learned another lesson about custom wheels...dont do it.

Whoa, wait a minute! You meant to tell me they have heat shrinkable hose ends? They must be pretty special to hold that much in place.

I have used lots of heat shrink in my career, but have never seen these types of fittings. What does it take to shrink these on the tubing? I have a Master 1500 watt heater we use at work to shrink tubing.

Tell me more, please!

Tom, O'Reilly's Auto Parts is a distrubutor for Gates Rubber. I just called them, they don't stock the hose clamps but they can get them. They told me for a 5/8" heater hose, it would be about $4.00 each. Hope this helps.

What kind of water jet is it, and what is the software used to drive it. You see them being used on American Chopper and other shows, but they don't ever go into detail about the software and how hard it is to get it going.

The lift you have looks just like mine, but mine is gray. It was made in Texas but marketed by Cytech (Double Park 7000). I don't think they are around any more.

Sorry for all the questions!

LOL......The water jet and other CNC equipment is like Black Magic as far as I am concerned.....I'm from the old school and learned the trade by cranking handles.....But.....once I seen the power you have in your finger tips and pushing computer keys, it changed my whole thought process on the years spent cranking those handles........I know what we need to do things but I don't really fully understand how everything gets there....I just know we spend tons of money on software and I leave that part of the business to the young ones.....LOL.....But....it todays world there is almost nothing that can't be made.......just takes $$$$$ to get there........But....Spend the cash to stay at the front or Go Fishing.......

We run a lot of 5 Axis CNC machines, any design program will work to design the part. Auto-cad, solid-works, etc but the program we use to transfer the 3D image to the machine is called SurfCam.

I would imagine the water-jet manufacturer may have their own program they use but are most likely similar.

Its pretty nifty, we trim plastic parts and once you have the design file its a simple process to send it to the router.

I was just wondering what they used. I have AutoCad 2006 and the newest TurboCad v19, so I'm pretty versed with CAD.

My Dad was one of the pioneers of the automated 5 axis milling machines back in the late 60's at McDonnell Aircraft. They used to use punch tape to run the machines to cut scale model parts for wind tunnel designs. He later put that to good use and developed the machine that cut an entire DC10 wing spar from one piece of 7075-T7 aluminum. One spar was as big as a football field!

In 1973, he instructed Ford Motor Company on the processes involved with the new technology. Very fascinating. I still have the paper he presented to FMC.

Wow!!......How cool is that!!! I was a drawing board/pencil guy and my son kept trying to get me to take a Solidworks class, I told him I was old school and was too old to change.....LOL......I came in one day and my drafting table was gone and all my pencils were on the floor broken......LOL....Went to a couple of Solidworks classes and it was going too slow so I bought all the manuals and taught myself at home in a week....Haven't look back since.....LOL

O.K.........The first item that needed to be adressed was to get the upper radiator hose pieced together and in the correct positions......I had to piece together a couple of hoses and get them connected together.........I made a couple of adaptors at the shop to accomplish this.....

This second adaptorjoin the 1 5/16" hose (from the LS engine) to the 1 1/2" (fitting at the Radiator) and I ended up installing a hose barb fitting for the LS steam line from the heads....

Dave came over and we started by powering up the fuel pump.....the pump ran but we had no fuel pressure at the rails.....WTF......Checked at the filter ....no fuel,.....but we could hear the pump running and fuel flowing inside the tank.....Hummm!!.....Pull the tank down and found that I didn't have the push on fitting inside the tank snapped on fully and when the line built some pressure it blew itself off.....an hour later it was back in the car and built pressure.....Bingo!!.....That was easy...."AND"........The moment of truth........... congrats.

you check pressure at the rails to make sure you are OK? It was beat in my head to do that to make sure everything will be ok with the new install.

It was also beat in my head to check engine codes before and then let it run for 20 mins then check again for them even if check engine light goes off.

I got the Power Steering reservoir mounted today....since the voltage regulator is no longer needed, I ended up mounting it right in that spot under the windshield washer bottle....worked out great...just in case I ever have to add fluid, it's just a couple of screws to remove the bottle assy.....I also got the radiator hoses all finished and added the coolant to the system.....not a drop leaked......I also changed the serpentine belt for a slightly shorter one......I'm waiting for a new turn signal switch to show up so I can finish all the under dash wiring and get that back together.....Exhaust hopefully later this week, then a front end alignment, then install the sheetmetal........getting close

Keep cranking on that thing Ken, you're making outstanding progress. I do wish I knew where you find the time though!

BTW, I took a page from your book and installed a pair of the Ridetech upper control arms. Hoping they will solve the vibration under acceleration issue the car has. I do hope they won't need adjusting though - they were a serious pain to get in.

So I've heard. I'm guessing it's because they don't have quite enough torque to twist the rear end housing? Just a guess.

Kidding aside, I'll find out this weekend if they did the trick.

Even though pictures wouldn't show any visual progress, I got a lot finished over the weekend....Got the Spal fan controller installed and programmed (Thanks Chad).....I had a couple of nagging electrical issues that had me pulling my hair out....one was I couldn't get the headlights to work.....I had power to the parking lights and turn signals but nothing to the headlights (new forward light harness).......Ended up being a loose connector in the headlight plug......so simple yet so difficult to find........(Big Smile)......I also had some issues with the Dakota Digital Tail lights.....the passenger side turn signals and brake lights didn't work.....even though I tested everything while installing them and they worked fine....I spent a lot of time cleaning contacts and still no luck.....got out the circuit tester and found that as I was cleaning up the harness and trimming off the old bulb connectors .......I trimmed off a wire that fed the Turn and brake lights....simple fix.....Duhhhhh!!!......
I also got the transmission gear selector module programmed and working to show what gear the trans was in on the dash display....pretty cool......I also will be putting the dash back in today or tomorrow and after getting the wires all neatened up under the dash, I got the radio speakers all wired up and ready to go.....Exhaust and Front end alignment this week....

Got the front seat installed and pretty much all the wiring taken care of......I just have to run a few wires for the Satelite Radio......another problem with this Nu Yawk Survivor car popped up last week (when does it end)......I couldn't get the windshield wipers to work.....ended up the wiper motor was shot....Imagine that!!......so after looking and seeing what a new original type motor cost, I decided to go with a Newport Engineering aftermarket wiper setup....2 speed w/intermittent feature.....took all of 30 minutes to install......and it works beautiful.......Time to start putting the doors and sheetmetal on........

The front seats have new foam buns in them....very comfortable....

Getting "Real" close.........Almost got all the Nu Yawk out of this beauty........and....I found an old original style "Nickey" sticker......Hummm!!!!

The seal gets put on to the cowl panel before being bolted in......there is a groove in the seal that the panel slides into, when the panel is bolted in, it gets compressed and held on position.....I'll take a better picture later

Took the car to Daves Mufflers in Kenosha and a very talented guy by the name of Mike created the entire exhaust system .....I was concerned about going over the rear axle assy as the car is lowered and there really wasn't a lot of room.....Mike nailed it.......Great job!!

We put on Flowmaster Delta 50's.........Perfect sound...

Got it home and finished up the drivers side door glass install.....gonna do the Passenger side tomorrow morning....then off to get the front end aligned tomorrow afternoon....

It's looking good, but I would not get it aligned utill the car is complete. Otherwise, the front will drop a little more once you put the rest of the parts on and the alignment will be off.

It's coming together Ken.

More sponging from me if you don't mind. When you had the alignment done did you go with factory specs or custom?

Obviously the factory specs are based on bias plys and 45 year old thinking.

Things are moving right along........The new wiper system didn't have a washer pump system with it.....so I bought one of their add on pumps and mounted it where no one will see it after the fender is installed........small, simple and it works perfect......

I also got the interior pretty much finished up .......Now I just have to install the front Sheetmetal and finish up the convertible top weather stripping.........

It's been a couple of days since the last progress report.....I got the Grille and all the other parts lined up and installed........I was assembling the bumper and lower grille assy getting ready to install it tonight.......then I found one of the lower bumper trim pieces that ended up having a stripped hole in it.....so....I take it to the shop tomorrow and put a Heli-coil in it so I can finish the install........A couple of loose ends that need to be resolved........I didn't feel the brakes were working correctly....so ...I checked and came to the conclusion that the rear disc's weren't operational.......So....After Bitching about the crappy products, I went back and read the Instructions about proper adjustment during install......OOPS!!!........
And......I'm taking the car next week to have the Doors and Fenders aligned by people more talented and experienced than me..........I got everything close.....but, It needs to be a little better and as I've learned......Convert's are a "censored" to get the alignment correct.........I threw in the towel and waved the White flag......LOL

Ken,if you dont mind me asking. Are the Coys you have the same size frt and rear as far as tire size, rim width and offset? I think I seen 255/55/18 in one of your pics but are they staggered frt to rear or can you rotate them? Thanks

4", since I got the same ones you did and made sure to write it down on my garage wall for future reference.

I cant rotate since the tires are directional. Not sure if Ken went the directional route also.

Cant go front to back since car's stance would be raked different.

I seen your running the 255/55/18 ( I think) on the rear, whats the frt tire size if you dont mind.

pretty sure backspacing was the same for both. PM me if you want my info. call coys and ask them, I am sure they would tell you.

also, if you are buying coys, like them on fb. they have specials. mine cost $750 for all four including the shipping. they were not fast.

Im always trying to document what fits and what dont to get me close in wheel and tire selection on whatever I drive and am looking for wheel/tire fitament. Like today I measured my 66 belair with a 15x10 w/4.5 backspace and a 15x10 w/5.5 backspace only to find out that a 15x10 w/5.0 backspace would be perfect without having to modify things.

The 15x10 w/5.5 backspace would have needed the rear coil spring hump removed from the side of the frame for best clearance.

Just trying to see what others are running to get an idea dimensionally what can work.

I do like the Coys but have read some bad stories here and on other sites while others have praised them.

Thanks for the info.

I had the A/C system charged at Jeffery Motors in Kenosha by Dave, Pete and Jeff......they also found a couple of "Rattles" under the car.....Loose Bolts.....Duhhhh!!!.....

Then the car went down to Nostalgic Auto Body in Island Lake, Ill where Joe and Kevin worked their magic on aligning the doors, fenders, window glass, added the rocker trim and found more loose bolts......Duhhhh!!!

Drove home and decided to put it up on the lift and check every bolt.....LOL........Now.....I still have the problem of the rear pads being loose in the Seville Calipers.....worked the parking brake like crazy and still loose....so....I wasn't happy with the braking of the car....while on the lift I noticed something on the inside of the rear wheel....looked a little closer and realized that the axle seal was leaking and the rotor was covered in oil........Took everything apart and found that the seal was riding right on the edge of the axle surface that was exposed to the weather and the pock marked area ate the seal...DARN!!!!........After looking around for one of those repair sleeves to fix it, I couldn't find the right size....Darn!!.......so I bought another seal and I was able to install it another 1/8" deeper into the housing so it would ride on a good surface........I also noticed a lot of metal flakes in the drained rear end grease......Double Darn!!!.......Two weeks to Power Tour......Ordered new axles and ring and pinion today...LOL!!!

Ken,are the inner pads the ones that are rattling on those rear calipers? If so I remember there are clips that engage around the piston and then the clip engages the pad to reduce that inner pad from shifting/rattling around. Glad your finding the little things before your trip, sorry some of those somewhat little things arent quick or cheap like having to do the ring and pinion.

The spring clips are on the pistons.....and attached to the pads correctly.....It's the outer pads that are loose......Thanks for trying to troubleshoot though..........

Just got home from the "Maiden" voyage....400 trouble free miles..........Issues that need to be corrected for Power Tour.....The Digital Gas gauge doesn't work too good....gonna have to check and see if I have it programmed for the GM sender correctly......the Ridetech suspension is awsum when you are going straight, but.....when turning a corner it seems the Ackerman is off as there is some minor tire squeeling..........I'll call Ridetech on Monday and ask for advice on solving that issue......the brakes are O.K.......but not great.......have to hook up the drain lines for the A/C........And need to get a couple of power outlets for the Satelite radio and charging cell phones.......minor stuff.....anyhow....here is a pic from the show.....

Just trying to help out on those as I know how annoying pad rattles can be. I seem to remember that some of those Sevilles had tabs on the upper outer portion of the pad that can be slightly bent to engage the caliper a little tighter, like the older S-10s had to do. Keeps the pad from rocking back and forth.

Great pics from the car show, good to be able to get a few shake down runs prior to the PowerTour.

Your pics of the install of the LS has made me start looking for a good deal on one.

Beautiful, of course!

I do have a question.
I saw that you got 5 new seat belts, as did I.

I took out the old ones, and there were 4, all outboard.

I didn't see any predetermined spots to mount a 5th, for the center, rear... I did replace the rear drivers side floor pan...

What did you do?

I was planning on just having 4, but a center seat belt in the rear would be nice to have available.

Update..........I bought the CPP 4 wheel disc brake assy.....it came with Wilwood front calipers and mid 80's Seville rear calipers with built in parking brakes.......Which (In theory) simplify everything.....LOL.....The E-Brake levers that are part of the caliper are key to setting these units up....The way they are supposed to work is to use an internal ratcheting device to keep the pads adjusted as the Parking brake is used........In the initial install set-up I fought with these things to get the pad clearance set-up correctly........Couldn't do it........after a week of messing with them I ended up modifying the arms by cutting and weldind to get the hex to time out with the stops so everything was adjusted correctly......
So....we took the car to the Dells for the show up there.....the brakes didn't seem to be working coprrectly even though I had a great pedal......Hummm!!!.......So.....The other day I stopped at the Frame-up Street Rod shop and talked to Donny and explained my concerns.....He took it for a test ride and hit the brakes pretty hard a couple of times.......got out the infrared temp gauge and shot the front and rear rotors....Front "Hot"......rear "Cool".......Hummm!!!......I left the car with him and 4 hours later I get a call that the car is fixed.........It seems the supplied factory proportioning valve was "Junk"......They put a adjustable one in and then "Fine" tuned the system...........Can you say "Stopping Power".........Man.....Instant Stress Relief........My hat is off to Frame-Up and Donny.........Sometimes is best to swallow your pride and just admit that other people know more that I do...........Lesson learned to not assume because it's new it must be O.K........

Ken,

Not to doubt Donny's abilities, but his familiarity with these problems is what solved your problem.

glad you are stopping.

I would say keep up the good work, but this project seems to be at the end.

Great to hear your issue has been resolved, sometimes the littlest things can drive you crazy.
Did you happen to get the rear pads to quit rattling while it was at their shop or prior?

Prior....I had to modify the E-Brake pull arms to get the pads tight........In following the instructions for adjusting the pads, I wasn't able to get the pad to stay in position when turning the hex adjuster stud back to get the E-brakes arms against the stops.......So......I ended up cutting the hex section out of the arms.......now I adjusted the pads out.......then I installed the hex section and arms.......I then marked the position of the section and arm........then I welded everything back together.....Hard way to get there but it worked....

I had another "Nagging" problem that wouldn't seem to go away.....I have all Ride Tech suspension on the car.....I had the front end aligned three times and when turning a corner the car would lightly squeel the tires ......and the Castor never looked correct.....I had it aligned again yesterday and after pulling out of the shop.....same thing....Tires squeeling.......So......I call Mark Webster to see how his car steers....(66 Impala with suspension)......his car had no issues.....so...I explained what was going on with my car.....as he's thinking about it, he ask's me if I put the original GM bushings from the old control arms into the new arms.......I say what Bushings???......So....he explains that these Bushings take up the difference in the bushing hole and the ecentric bolt o.d., and the head thickness allows for the compression of the unit after setting to lock everything in place........
I noticed the clearance he was talking about when I put the front end together and checked the Ecentric bolt in the old arm and it was sloppy also, so...I didn't think any more about it.....I went home and got the old arms out and noticed that only one side had the bushings in it (obviously I checked the bolt in the one with the missing bushings).....that's why the tire on the original Nu Yawk survivor was chewed up on that side.....Those Crazy Nu Yawk repair guyz......So....I take the old bushings out and measured them and made some new ones.....the car was back at Frame-Up for some other fine tuning...So, Donny took everything apart and installed the "New" missing bushings.......Back to the alignment shop tomorrow......hopefully the problem will now be solved as the alignment will now be in a controlled condition.......All this with one day to spare.......Leaving Friday a.m. for Detroit and the start of the Power Tour..........
Bottom line......I'm glad I talked to Mark!!

Lets hope that the things you found will resolve this issue. I can only think that with the lower arm moving, the car is having a toe in/out issue thats not apparent til driving and flexing the suspension.

If you dont mind after your next alignment could you please show me your alignment specs that they set the car at? I have done alignments for a living last 25 years and can see things in the specs just by you showing me the print out.I just like to know that your settings are where they need to be.I know you trust your guys,I just like to see the print outs. I give all my customers a print out showing before and after work.

I am anxious to see your car on the Tour after seeing you work your butt off.

Here's a picture of the bushings.........they center the bolt in the arm but more importantly, the heads of the bushings provide the correct width of the lower arm so when the eccentric adjusters are tightened, they allow for proper tightening........without them, the eccentric bolt is tightened against the crossmember, but the lower arm is still loose within the crossmember........there in lies the problem....

I think my replacement bushings came with those. no clicking here.

my alignment guy did tell me that the strut rod sleeve was missing. I ordered a new set, he took the nut off, and found out my frame repair was thicker than the original metal so there was some play. He took one off an old pontiac, cut it a little longer than the original, then it was fine. Oh yea, the $40 set from ebay is now in the parts bin.

"Strut rod sleeves" Leon?

Are those used to prevent over-tightening of the strut rod bushings and adjusting nuts?

I guess, cant really think what else they would do.

they may also keep the bushing from prematurely wearing on the serated edges of the threads.

Your -.5 would be your camber, and +4.5 caster sounds right on. You should have had just a bit positive "toe in".

Sounds like your ready for a very enjoyable trouble free trip.Have fun ,Be safe.

Ken,

What did you do for a tune? I took my car to a place and had a street tune/dyno. With the tune I wanted, I have 325 HP. I was having mystery problems with the engine and the tune has sorted everything out. I had this heavily de-tuned for mileage. Close to 390 when he played with settings. Was told with the weight of the car, and my desire for reliability over speed this was the best thing to do for durabilty. My fuel trims were all out of whack. I was positive 25%, he took them down to even. I was having excess fuel exploding in the exhaust. Cant praise East Coast Superchargers enough. drove the car 150 miles yesterday, long enough to make me want to fix some electrical problems today.

My only complaint is the shift point on third gear is a little high. I can live with it.

390rwhp from a LS1??? What mods have you done because that's not believable without a cam.

What detuning did they do exactly for more reliability? I'm not sure I follow that one either, especially dialing 65hp out of it? That's not de-tuning it, that's out-of-tuning it!

Detuning for mileage makes little sense either. After the headers and intake I tuned my LS1 for more power and it gets better fuel mileage at the same time.

Update!!........Well....The "Old" Beater has held up pretty well since the Power Tour ended.......But.....Here's what happened since then................The Big issue was that I had to send the car back to the Body shop to fix one of my screw-ups.....Since I had to replace the front fenders on my "Perfect" Survivor car, they didn't have the holes in them for the front fender trim.....so....when I got ready to install and drill the holes.......I put tape on the fenders so I didn't have to worry about scratching the paint and I marked the width of the trim right on the tape so I could easily drill the mounting holes......

Seemed like a good plan at the time......so.......I get the holes drilled, pulled the tape off, installed the trim ............and after looking at the trim installed, my stomach dropped and I was ready to puke.......I assumed that the fender spear would just be installed......Wrong!!!......The fender spear is straight and the fender reveal has a curve to it and the trim is supposed to follow the profile of the reveal in the fender........Ouch!!........I called the Body shop and because of being short on time for the Power Tour they needed the car for at least 4 days to weld the holes , Prep and repaint the fenders......didn't have the time so I said I would get it done when we got home.......fortunately......if anyone noticed the screw up on the Power Tour they were nice enough to not say anything about them.....LOL.....
As soon as we got home the car went right back to the Body Shop to be repaired.......$$$$$$$$Stupid Mistake.....But the Trim is now installed like GM wanted them to be.......

I also took the Door Panels off and added the decorative trim pieces that I mistakenly thought would have been included on fully assembled door panels as bought......LOL....again...didn't have the time to order and install them prior to leaving......but....they are now installed....

I also got sick of looking at the engine without an engine cover......I had a Camaro engine cover I was going to use but it ended up being too short....so I got some Corvette covers and trimmed them to fit.....

I also took off the Ridetech rear Panhard bar as it had spherical rod ends on it and it rattled....so In took it off and put the stock rubber bushed GM one back on.......Noise gone....and the stock one dropped right in.....

Great car......If I had to change one thing about the car I think I would put some quieter mufflers on it as the 50 series Flowmasters witgh the long tailpipes just seem a little to "Rappy" for me.......

I concur. I did a heads and cam on my 01 Firehawk. Its a small cam too and I am making 405hp and 375tq at the wheels. Also, I have long tubes, catted y-pipe and a FAST 90/90 intake. Yes, its tuned.

not arguing here, but an stock engine that makes 350 hp, add a different exhaust manifold (ceramic coated headers), no cats, dual exhaust and intake (elbow and K&N filter). then tune it. 390 at the engine out of whack?

I really wish that I made this up, but the $400 bill for the street tune reminds me of what I was told.

As for tuning down, I was told this will be done to keep the engine from leaning out and possibly frying a piston. I was told the timing curve was changed to keep the engine lasting longer. Ill get back to you when I get 100k miles on the car.

I honestly drive like an old man and could give a rats a** how many hp it makes. I do know this engine almost double the hp as the original, lighter and will get double the hp.

thanks for wasting ten minutes of my life.

20 hp gains are routinely picked up by a tune. so we are at 370 at the engine.

read on two posts that cold air intakes are another 10-20.

headers and exhaust...from 20-45....

since my hearing skills must have been out of whack, the reading skills at ls1 tech must have been out of whack too.

+40hp at the engine is possible. I've seen dyno results showing a cold air intake and long tube headers added about 35-40rwhp on a C5. You posted they were dynoing your car and that the peak was 390hp, which I assumed was rwhp and that's not posible with a bolt-on LS1.

How'd you get those numbers? Did you just calculate those numbers from the rwhp on the chassis dyno?

I still stand by my statement that taking out 65hp was a huge amount in the name of de-tuning.

Thats friggin incredible. That means tens of thousands of us have wasted countless thousands on cams, head work and other real engine work. People claim all kinds of gains with bolt ons and if your pulling 50+ hp on bolt ons alone, where is the proof. Dyno runs printed out. Baseline runs, then runs with the bolt ons. Manufacturers routinely claim big hp gains with headers or intakes or mufflers. Taken all together with a good set of heads and a matched cam, you get way more than fifty. But hey, if you said you got 50+ with bolt ons and a tune, more power, no pun intended, to you.
PS BTW, I am out of this thread. Arguing about hp gains this way or that is pointless.

One of the things that I knew would have to be improved in the car at some time was the front seat....It was there and looked good, but wasn't exactly the most comfortable thing to sit on for a long stint behind the wheel.....I longed for a contoured foam aftermarket seat like I had in the Chevelle and the 37.......But nothing was available for the big cars......So......I just happened to find a Power Strato Bench seat on Ebay.....as I remember they only installed around 11,000 of these seats in 67 and newer cars.....Neat seats as they had Bucket seat backs, a armrest, and a slightly contoured bench seat base......Hit the Buy-It now button and the seller was right in the chicago area......Picked it up today....It needs to be totally rebuilt.....but......That's O.K......I'll get it dis-assembled and chemically stripped to remove all the "Patina".....painted ......new seat Buns made with a little more contour than stock...and get new seat covers made with the same pattern and medallions as stock........It never ends with these things.......LOL.....

Seat as picked up....and the seller was brutally "Honest" in describing the condition of the seat in the Ebay ad.....Not one mention of Perfect or Survivor......LOL

Here we go again.....only on a much smaller scale.......

Still couldn't pass it up and it was priced accordingly.....No Complaints.....It's saveable I think....LOL.....Here are the dis-assembly pic's

The education continues...........I bought a Power Bench seat out of a 4 door car off ebay.....and my thought was that maybe the bench seat bottom would be close enough that I could modify it to work with the Strato seat back.......went and picked it up and it was in pretty good shape with just minor surface rust.......and as a bonus the seat motor and mechanisms worked.....so...I took it apart and realized that the seat frames weren't even close.....Oh Well!!! At least I got a good Power unit and some spare seat springs that might come in handy later.....And I found another Strato-Bench for a 4 door car (Non movable seat backs) ......So I bought it as I should be able to piece together one seat out of the three....LOL......Don't ya just Love it when a plan comes together..........Time for plan "C"......

I bought a third seat (Got it from Donny on this site).......This one is in excellent shape (the frame that is).......It is out of a 4 door car so the seat backs don't move, but I will be able to piece together parts from the first seat to make every work......

So.....After getting all the seats dis-assembled......It ended up that the seat back frames were the only things that could salavaged from the first seat.......the second seat had the complete power track assy and wire harness assy that was useable........the third strato bench seat (out of a 4 door) was the Gold mine for the rest of the parts........But....I had to adapt the moveable seat backs on to the non moveable 4 door frame.....I kept the rusted out original so I could compare the two and see the differences.....It ended up that there were two brackets welded on to the 4 door frame to keep the seat backs locked in position that were easy to cut off....and the tapped hole I needed for the seat stop bumper was already there.....simple fix......Then I just had to cut a little clearance in the frame for the Pivot links as the solid mounts were slightly different......

The Latch mechanisms were in need of some TLC out of the first seat....they were Rusted solid.....had to take them apart and make some new pins and find new springs.....(Thanks McMaster-Carr)......

Got the seat backs installed....we have to take the seat springs from the solid backs and add them to the moveable ones....

Got the power seat switch mounted in the lower seat side trim........

Dave (I'm Rare) got me hooked up with a local upholsterer that really "Gets" it......The Strato bench started production in 67 and I'm putting it in the 66....so....no seat covers available.....But we ordered a set of covers and seat buns for 66 Bucket seats......the backs are the same.....and Mike (the Upholsterer) is going to build the bench seat bun out of the bucket buns and make the matching bench seat cover to suit.......
I know this is much to do about nothing, but......It seems I make everything as complicated as possible......LOL......When we are finished I just hope its worth the effort and is comfortable n those long drives.....LOL......the bench seat that's in it now even though it's got new a new bun....is like sitting on a worn out mattress......Pretty Impressed with Mike as he was showing me how to rebuild the stock seat springs for more support and comfort........More pic's to come as Mike gets into the seat......Again........Ken makes eveything complicated.....Just hope its worth the effort......
