I have a 2004 Suburban with a 5.3 L engine. The oil pressure guage is pegged at 80 psi. I suspect it's the sensor. Question: Where is it located? |

I recently changed mine. I could never see it when it was on the truck. I ended up going and buying a new one so that I could recognize the feel and locate it that way. Bought the GM oil pressure sending unit removal tool as well. Turns out it's just a deep well socket with a grove cut in it. |

So what is typical oil pressure to see? I have a 4.8l and at idle I have about 42lbs. At 2000 rpm I read 60lbs. It seems a bit high to me, but I am not sure what is normal. John |

You're fine with that oil pressure. The pressure always increases as the rpm's increase.

I have recently had a oil sending unit problem on my 03' Suburban 5.3. My guage was reading 80psi constantly. I ruled out a stepper motor going bad as pulling the fuse to reset the guage did not solve the issue. I purchased a new unit installed it and indeed it solved the problem. Unfortunately, in about a week the guage was reading 80 again. I pulled the new one and cleaned it, and cleaned the old one as well (dont know why I saved it) Neither worked. Any ideas? Maybe I got a bad one? |

It may be just under the distributor cap just to the driver side |

Yeah, no distributor, the location is as black95jimmy stated earlier. Right rear of block if looking from front. You can only get one hand back there to remove the connector. Then use a 1 1/16" deep socket w/swivel and a 6" extension. I'm getting way to good at this. 95jimmy any ideas on why my replacement worked for a week then went bad also? Bad luck? My Burb has 130K on it and uses a qt about every 2500mi. |

I took the old one out of my vehicle and put in the new one and then put the old sensor in the new box and returned it to the dealer for a refund. Sorry about that. |

LOL, well thanks for the reply smitty. I'd believe you if I lived in the ATL area, SO CAL boy. I do get a discount on dealer parts thru the family Body Shop but... I have some good info to pass on if you are indeed in need of a oil pressure sensor. Dont buy one from the dealer. With my discount I paid $42 from the dealer. Now on my third one, just purchased from Auto Zone for $36. EXACT same part (Duralast) that you get from the dealer. LOL made in Mexico. I'll reply again if this goes out also, but working fine now. My only other conclusion if this one goes out is incorrect voltage delivery from the ECM??? The last one (not the original) showed a burnt post on removal. |

Well, my second replacement has gone out, lasting about a month. Does anyone have a suggestion? Did I get two bad sensors? I guess I'll check voltage before putting in another, then submit to smittys trick of putting the old one in the box for a refund since I'm about $90 bucks into this now.

I'm trying to bring this thread back to life. I have the same problem with my oil sending unit as well which is located at the rear of the engine. Its a '03 Yukon 5.3L Vortec Engine. I see that some of the people in this thread managed to change the oil sending unit themselves. How was this done?.. I've read that the manifold will need to be removed but I also read that it can be done without removing it. |

Hello all. I just replaced the oil pressure sensor on my wife's 2006 Yukon (5.3 engine). I was able to replace with only removing the plastic intake cover and the air intake (from air cleaner to throttle body). This required loosening three 5/16 screws (one on intake cover and two clamps on air intake). These were removed to ensure they weren't cracked as I laid across engine to reach back of engine on the drivers side (right side) to remove the sensor. Location is directly under firewall before back of engine meets the transmission. I used a 3/4" drive, two 6" 3/4" extensions, and a Autozone Oil pressure sensor socket #25254 to remove the sensor. I will try and add pictures for location and to show what I removed. Took 15min max. Hopefully this will help! |

Pictures are great, although kind of small for any detail.

Oil pressure guage needle now sits where it should. No more jumping around. |
