Yes, you have to pull the distributor. Mark the location carefully. If you mark it properly, just drop it back in the same location. It can be a PIA to drop in the same location. You'll just have to keep trying. If it does not fall, trying to set all the timing marks properly will even more of a PIA.

You should drain the radiator. If you don't, any water above the intake can fall into the oil valley. You don't want that or you'll have to change the oil too.
Do you have at last a Chilton or Haynes manual? You should have one. Trying to get an answer through the site might take a long time.
